Newb, working with Layering on a Landspeeder Storm

Hi there,

First let me just say that i've enjoyed lurking in the digital shadows for the last year. This community seems very friendly, yet gives the artist proper feed back needed to improve (without flaming the crap out of said artist). I've just gotten back into painting miniatures in the last year or so, but i feel like i have improved quiet a bit since i started up again, largely in part to websites like this one.

In any case, i figure it's about time i grew some chest hair (figuratively speaking, in RL i have lots :silly!: )and posted something as a WIP.

Anyways, i have been working on a Landspeeder Storm from GW. I have to say it's been a great model so far, lots of little details etc. Seeing as it is a vehicle i figured it would be a good place to try out some new techinques (ie layering/blending) because it has some larger sized sections i can practice on.

I wish i had of worked up the courage before to psot some pictures of this model in the beginning stages, but at the same time it's still pretty much just the base coat on the model at the moment.

Three pictures to start things off:

sorry for the quality of the pics, i clearly need to work on my camera skills a bit (auto white balance FTL). Probably doesn't help that i made a light tent out of a beer box ( ), white fabric and hot glue, used the desk lamps from my painting station for the light! Looks like i need to invest in some new bulbs.

you can see my attempts at learning how to blend/layer on the second pic a little better than the first one. The third picture (the right side of the model) doesn't have any real attempt yet at blending the colors. I've attempted the layering/blending on the two "wings" on the left side of the model and on parts of the top of it, although the top parts don't really look like blending yet lol.

I guess my question for you guys is: do you think a vehicle will look silly with the blending on it? Or will it look ok as long as i don't over do it?

any questions, comments and suggestions are very much welcome :)

Thanks in advance.
