New user. First bust. Goblin WIP!

Hi all. New user to the forum! This is my first go at a bust.

Background blurb if interested.... I've been painting for a couple solid months now. My wife got me a model boat a few years ago (still to finish the damn thing lol), it was back then I gave some GW minis a go after buying thier paints.
But then I actually fell away from it just as quickly as I got into it really. (Space etc in the flat we were in.) I got back into it a few months ago and have painted a couple more 28mm and a couple 1:35 figures.
Seeing the awesome busts around couldn't resist and had to give one a go.

I got this Goblin feller 3d printed, the stl file was free and found someone to print it. Not sure of the scale. (I gave the printer some measurements but forgot about the base etc lol. I reckon its around 1/9.)

Taking my time having great fun with this guy. Always learning.
Just started the flesh earlier today using Lahmian medium for the first time with my paint. Love it!!

I reckon I'm about half way through. So will upload some more pics along the way.
Any feedback at all is much appreciated.

You've got really nice blends and textures on your model, and the eyes in particular are really well done! Looking forward to seeing your progress on this.

Re the eyes. I need to get the right one the same as the left. I've painted back over it with the base color for a second attempt!
It's harder to get to than the other. (Paint/angle doesn't take the same)


It wasn't until I put the very first layer of paint on the eyeball I noticed the 3d print actually has pupil detail etc. But the other doesn't.
But pictured it having a vertical black slit type eye so going for that anyway

Big bust but the eyes are still tiny dammit!

That's a cool idea. Perhaps with a scar over the eye to accompany it!

I haven't did much since my last post with it being the new year etc.
I did do the eyes again, this time using a toothpick and 1.25x reading glasses. I'm fairly happy with them now and weary of attempting them again as that'll be the 4th attempt lol.
But the blind eye is a good idea to fall back on.

Continuing on with it tomorrow. Will post an update on him tomorrow.

Little update. Decided to have a go at a blind eye! I thought what the hell.

Quite happy with how it's looking. Phone pic isn't great. Doesn't quite do it justice if I say so lol.
I'll post up some better pics with my dslr at the weekend.

Mixed up some ivory, light brown and grey.
Then gave it a tiny wash with nuln oil to tone I back a bit as it stood out too much.

Still to touch up the scar a little. Scored it on with a hobby knife and gave it a lick of paint with a dark red brown then a tiny bit of dark red wash. I want to suggest a wound but not a fresh one obviously.

Maybe it looks worse! You decide lol. It's all good.

Spent a couple of hours on the flesh today, building up the highlights. More to do.

The eye is a bit on the blue side now. Bah!
But I'm happy with it.

Like you say the eye is a little too blue, try stippling some light greys over the blue (keeping some of the blue layer) to get that dead eye glaze.

Not much further forward today. Just working those flesh highlights.
Another 2hrs today. A couple yesterday. I don't have my workstation down yet (comfy seating namely) so I'm starting to break my back after a while. So I decided to cut it short and head to the gym and straighten myself out.
I swear down..... when working out at the gym I had my eyes closed at one point and I seen the muscles and contours as if I was still painting, lool!

This is starting to look fantastic mate! The colors you've got going on the bones and teeth are great, and the muscles on the face are looking super nice. Plus that blind eye pulls the attention.

With all the handling doing the flesh the teeth are a bit patchy now. I'll need to touch them up a bit later and hopefully not make them odd looking having been painted on two different sessions etc. Eek!

I hope to get the extreme ends of flesh parts like the ends of the lips, the tip of the nose and brows etc a subtle hint of pink/red. I believe glazing will be the way to go but haven't glazed yet so that will be fun lol.

Well I didn't quite get my mixing right on my final highlights. Went a bit mental with the yellow. Came out a bit too strong.
Not a total disaster I'm sure.
I've ordered Vallejo glaze medium. When that comes in, would I be able to tone it back down a bit by glazing? With a light green I'm guessing?
Made a small start on the leather straps too. They're up next!

Oh, and I think I finally happy with the blind eye though!

Nice work! Yeah I think you are right about the glaze, it should knock the yellow back down a bit if you need it to.

Daft question.... regarding glazing, should I just use the shade of green I used before I went in heavy the final layer or even darker?

Don't overthink it If you glaze over entirely with a green it'll pull all the colors (shades and tones) towards it, so it'll reduce contrast too.
If you use a lighter green, everything becomes lighter green. Same with a darker green. The more translucent the glaze the less the effect will be.

Also, just in case you didn't know this already, but your brush doesn't always deposit the same amount of pigment everywhere:
So if you want to lighten/tint the yellow more, use a brighter green, and try "pulling" the glaze from the darker green sections onto the yellower sections by putting your loaded brush down on the darker section, pulling towards the lighter yellow, and then picking up your brush. This will deposit most of the glaze onto the yellow highlights, tinting them with the glaze.

Just my $0.02, I am still learning a lot of this stuff.

Yeah I'm quickly learning how the brush deposits the paint etc. Going over those muscles again and again I've learnt a good bit I think.
It's a good feeling when you get it to sit where you want and it builds up. A bit like adding the latter stages of highlights (when you get the shade right that is) it just pops so much and comes to life.

Been a while since I updated this!

I eventually got my glaze medium. Off Ebay. "fast and free delivery".... was free but not so fast. Then moved house/ decorate. All the good excuses under the sun.


Anyhoo I had great fun getting into this glazing. I glazed some purple into the recesses. Then went back over the highlights with yellow. And then orange.
Then I went back into the recesses again with a pink dulled down with a spot of black in.



I rusted up more of the metal parts and did the leather. Id hoped to get the leather more worn looking/pushed it more.

After I took the photos I took care of the glossy shine on the leather with matte varnish. Another first using that. Lots of firsts on this!

Didn't get time to update pics again though. Been hectic lol.

So think that was about it. I think he's done!
