Hello!
Im totally new to warmachine, but am really excited at the prospects getting into it! Im primarily looking to get a little help with how to start a core army of Cryx, if possible, with Mortenebra as my Warcaster. The reason i choose Mortenebra is because, from what ive read, it sounds like i will be able to use more helljacks, keep them alive longer, give them more range, and add more sting to my long range attacks via opponent debuffs. Now, for some reason ive had a hard time finding Mortenebra based army lists online, so i was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction or give me some help with this? I cant afford a huge army at the moment, so thats why i chose 25 pts, though im of course open to change it.

Here are a few models i really love and would be thrilled if they could be included in my list.

Mortenebra- for sure (unless its really a bad choice and you want to suggest somebody else)

Of course any Helljacks
Brute Thrall
Cephalyx Overlords
Soul Hunters
Withershadow Combine
Pistol Wraiths
Warwitch Siren

I know those may not be reasonable units to have in such a force, so dont hesitate to set me straight.

Also, since i am 100% new to all this, whats the first step, do i pick up the crxy book? or the rulebook? or grab some models first and use supplementary online rules?

Thanks so much!
Adam

Hi Adam,

I am also going through the whole 'getting in to Warmachine' thing myself. Firstly you need the rule book - Warmachine Prime Mk2. Depending on where you are you can get it direct from Privateer Press (although I cannot find it in the store). You can also try Maelstrom Games or Firestormgames if you're in the UK (but they do free international shipping on orders over a certain amount).

In addition to the rules book there is the Cryx Forces book which should give you everything you need for Cryx force.

As for what you want to put into a force . . . as I'm just beginning myself you may want to PM Valander as he has lead me through the initial stages. He is also a Cryx player.

Also, check out the Privateer Press forums as they will have a lot of information there.

Hope this helps a bit.

Morty is indeed a cool caster. What you have there, though, is really not good stuff with her for the most part, other than the Withershadow Combine. They kinda rock.

You won't be able to use the Brute Thrall at all--he's a unit attachment for Mechanithralls; if you don't have a Mechanithrall unit, you can't take him.
The Soul Hunters are "ok", and really only if you want cav. They're not great, and honestly for the points I'd just shove another helljack in there. Cephalyx are damn cool models, but they're hard to use without enough troop support (specifically Drudges), and a bit points-pricy.

For Morty, I'd suggest:
Seether, Harrower, Deathjack (if you want your friends to hate you), some bonejacks for arc nodes (probably 2, maybe 3). I'd also probably throw in a Necrotech, since he can help repair jacks as well. Withershadow is good, and the Siren is definitely worth including.

Also, since i am 100% new to all this, whats the first step, do i pick up the crxy book? or the rulebook? or grab some models first and use supplementary online rules?

Thanks so much!

You should get, at minimum: Prime, Mk II and a Cryx 2010 Mk II Card Deck (make sure you get the 2010 version). Mainly because the deck will give you most of the cards for most units, which will help if you're buying older stock that might come with Mk I cards--which are incompatible. The Cryx book is nifty, but you don't have to have it, though it is somewhat easier to read through a book for stats than a mess of cards, and does have great fluff.

And the Dragonfather welcomes you to his service. ;)

Edit: You might poke around with http://www.forwardkommander.com too, which is an online list builder for Warmachine/Hordes. It will at least give you an idea of point costs of things.

Ok, so from talking to allot of folks, and from the advice ive been getting from you guys, ive decided i should go for a 35pt army, and this is my list so far

35pts
Morti + Deryl 4pts
Deathjack 11pts
Harrower 9pts
Leviathan 8pts
Necrotech + Scrap Thrall 1pt
Necrotech + Scrap Thrall 1pt
3 Scrap Thrall 1pt
Warwitch Siren 2pts
Warwitch Siren 2pts

Total 35pts

What do you guys think?

(btw, that forwardkommander site was hugely helpful)

I wouldn't bother with the Leviathan, and you probably don't need two sirens and two necrotechs. Unlike 40k/Fantasy, too many of the same model type isn't a good thing; you usually need/want a little more versatility. The list you shot me in that PM was better than the above.

hello !

well i respectfully disagree with
Valander on the Leviathan: It´s a great model to trigger overrun, a very important spell to get your big Warjacks into melee, it worksmore or less like this: cast overrun on the Leviathan, activate the big crab, let hi use that handy spike cannon to shot something dead within a 13 inch radius. Now you can advance an warjack outside of it´s activation, thaen activate it and charge the target. with the Deathjack taht means additional six inches, wch usually helps alot. Second example: trigger overun with a different Jack, tah advance the Lerviathan. Modles that move or are moved outside of their own activation still get the aiming bonus ( +2 on the stat , meaning 7) . Asssumed you loaded him up with maximum focus , or better have him in b2b contact with Morti. He can use her focus now. In numbers that´s up to 3 shots that will hit fairly reliable with power 13 ( 14 , respectivley 15 on minis with medium and large bases - see special rules )

if theres one downside, it´s the fact that both, Harrower and Leviathan are awesome with Morti, but the the jacks in a 35 Pts. list are pretty expensive.

If I'm reading this correctly, you still have 4 points to play with.
Mortenebra's 4 points in the bottom right corner are free warjack points.
They are subtracted from points spent on her battle group.

Unless my memory fails me...?

OK, Morty is my go to gal.

Mortenebra
Deathjack - it's an auto include at 12 points, now you get it for 11? Yes please.
Harrower - This is morty's answer to infantry. So much fun and so effective.
Seether - I for one like how efficient it is and with it only costing 8 points thanks to the tier it's actually worth the points.
Slayer - a straight forward cannonball
Warwitch Siren x2 - You have to have two in order to meet the tier requirements and frankly, I bring two in every list, more or less.
Necrotech - Jack a little beat up? Not a problem.
Scrap thralls - with the tier benefit they are advance deploying 18" and will for sure cause your opponent to change focus.

Not only is this list chock full of focus efficient mean machines, it's also a viable tier 4 list which has won 100% of its games.

Enjoy!

Personally, I'd try to fit the Withershadow Combine in any Morty list I would play. They're just so damned useful...

Yeah they're useful but for 5 points in a tier list you can add in a slayer who is not only useful, but deadly.

She only has one upkeep and that's a spell Derlyss can throw around for you if you find paying the upkeep a bit too spendy.

Aye McCryx hit that one right on. You've got a decent Tier 3 going there, although I'd consider the following:35ptsMorti + Deryl 4ptsDeathjack 11ptsHarrower 9ptsSlayer 5ptsSlayer 5ptsNecrotech + Scrap Thrall 1ptWarwitch Siren 2ptsWarwitch Siren 2ptsThis gives you the extra hitting power and bumps you up to Tier 4! I run Scrap thralls and Necrotechs, and they rarely seem to do anything for me. So you'll be deploying 2 inches closer to your opponent, have stealth for the first turn, and be ready for a turn two Recalibration, Overrun, and spell slaved Terminal Velocity. Or turn three to be safe. Deathjack is a great tool, focus effeciency is key.

*Edit: Threadomancy, sorry.

Morty is one of my favorites as well. She is Cryx's WarJack 'caster, so the more jacks the better. I usually take a unit of Mecanithralls with her. They are cheap and cover flanks, or act as a meatshield while you get her 'jacks in range to start beating face.

Two things I will point out... 1) The Faction books only contain what models were released prior to MkII. You will need Wrath and Colassals to have all the info. 2) It's sometimes hard to say with any certainty what "works" with a particular 'caster. What works for you, andwhat works for me, may be two different things. Your playstyle will have a huge effect on your unit/model choices. You may even find that Morty is not for you. After 10+ years of playing WarMa-Hordes I can say that it plays like no other miniature wargame out there. There are no "ideal" lists for particular armies or 'casters.

What I suggest is selecting models you like because of their appearance, fluff, or any other reason. And then play the hell out of that list for a few months until you know the game and how that list functions inside and out. Then start tweaking the list when you're ready to try something else. The easies change to make is the 'caster itself. Using the same list, but swapping out Mortenebra with Deneghra will completely change how the army plays.

Hope all this helps. :cat:
