Well, after stalking around the CMON for awhile, I finally got around to joining, and finally posted my first mini that I\'ve almost completely sculpted. While no award winner, I don\'t think it\'s horrible for my first. But it would help if I could get your opinions on the piece:

While I realize some areas, such as the faceless aspect of the miniature are odd, I did so in order to give the sculpt a feeling of disconnection from the normal human, which (I think) adds a sense of fear to what would otherwise be a magnificent sight. Also, I was basing this piece off of a lot of my inspirational art, found here: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v308/Rogue-Gladiator/Angel%20Project/

Let me know what I can do to improve my skills, or let me know what suggestion you all have for painting. Thanks!

Wow, really great work, especially for a first miniature. In truth i like the faceless aspect, gives it an otherworldly look. Work more on your musculature and hair, making it more even and natural looking would be my suggestion. Still better then anythign i would ever hope to do. i expect some nice stuff from you in the future.

Thanks for the responses so far- I appreciate them.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have the feeling that\'s where I should be working most at the moment as well. Luckily I have an encyclopedia of anatomy that I will start looking through with a bit more vigour, in hopes of understand the human musculature a bit more clearly.

Hair has always posed a problem for me, I don\'t really know why- A lot of people think it\'s easy, and are surprised when I tell them my view on hair. The way I see it though, it takes talent to maintain a perfectly even raised area as you make more and more strands- but I supose patience would be the best rememdy for this- suppose I should work on that then.

I dont know the fluff but I think the definition is good and the concept is sturdy

The fluff is as follows:

\"While created from the shards of the Old One Seraphaal to combat the Dark Forces, Angels still possess emotions such as love and loyalty. Some angels, however, are more attuned to emotions such as anger, grief, and hatred, and when suffering a painful loss at the hands of Chaos, these individuals may turn to their martial training as a form of comfort. These are the Dominions of the Angelic armies, becoming the embodiment of Seraphaal’s hatred and fury. Training ceaselessly, their entire meaning is dedicated to exacting vengeance on the powers of the Four. Such a journey is no easy one, and these individuals become skilled far beyond the normal soldiers of the host, and even stronger than some of the Princedoms themselves. For this skill in arms, however, a price must be paid. The Dominions become restless wanderers, preferring the solitude of their quest, and never again having a place to call their home. While these warriors are rare, it is nevertheless common to see them join the campaigns taken against Chaos by their brethren, only for the sake of exacting their retribution for the pain they bear.\"

Fluff is a bit dodgy, as that\'s just a quick write up done by me. The stats for the model, as well as the fluff and stats for the rest of the army, can be found here:

Love to see some more stuff you have done.

Well, at the moment I really don\'t feel any of my old painted minis are up to snuff to show off to you all. As for sculpts, as this is one of my first greens (only have done one before it- it\'s decent, but not amazing by any means), I don\'t have too much to post. I do, however, plan to have some terrain in the future for you all\'s viewing pleasure... just gotta convince myself to sit down and do it!

While I understand what you are getting at with the face, I think it just comes across as undone.

I couldn\'t pull up your \"inspirational\" art it said the connection failed, but I\'ll try again later....

I like the fluff and have always though a Angel warrior thing sounded cool.

I found this on the internet...it does give a ghastly appeareance

but even that has something going on in the blank area....Still...I really like the concept, and maybe it will be more convincing with paint.

Keep at it!

I see your point on it coming across as undone supervike, and while I see your point about giving it a ghastly appearance like the picture you found, I think that will be better achieved through use of paints, instead of trying to complete the face in some way... I guess it\'s kinda a lose-lose situation for me in some ways- if I add a face, I lose the concept of facelessness that I love. If I leave it out, it does look a bit unfinished...

Thems the breaks, I suppose.

This is a fantastic first sculpt and certainly better than my first effort!! I like the facelessness, it will work fine if painted well.

Oh and this quote

\"\"Tou Wa Ichiji Towanu Wa Matsudai No Haji\" (To ask may be a moments shame, but to not ask and remain ignorant is a lifelong shame) Masakki Hatsumi

Good quote and very true, but it\'s an old proverb and not by Hatsumi.

I got a chance to see you concept art, and I have to say the idea comes across much better...

I think you are right, the painting some \'darker\' sockets on the actual mini will make it play better.

Cool stuff BTW...keep us posted on this, its really good!

What? I don\'t quite understand what you\'re getting at with that comment, since I\'ve only sculpted the model so far. Could you elaborate please?

I\'m sure his intention was joking around at the fact you\'re paint scheme is plastic and greenstuff... ie. not painted yet.

How long did it take to create such a sculpt for your first attempt?

Finally, one thing I think you should improve is the sword... it looks like... it looks like... well, just look at it!
And in case you\'re sensitive to critique, I will say the robes are quite nice.

about a month, with a week break in there to step back from the model and decide where to go next. A lot of that time was spent simply trying to figure out what was the best way to sculpt the model. I feel like I could probably make a better one now in about the same time, though I\'m not 100% on that.

Finally, one thing I think you should improve is the sword... it looks like... it looks like... well, just look at it!

Well if you were a angry being, pumped up on what we can only assume is testosterone, what shape do you think your blade would be lol

Joking aside, the shape of the blade is how I envisioned it. I\'m trying to add a fantasy feel to an angel, and one way I decided to do so is to remove the very medieval weaponry that they\'re usually pictured with. In it\'s place, I\'ve added curved weapons to all my angelic concepts I\'ve been developing (for the same reason that cavalry would carry curved weapons- using a hacking blade on an opponent while in mid flight just wouldn\'t end well for the flying individual in my mind). While I realize this weapon would more or less be used for hacking, the front of the blade has been curved so that it can be thrust forward on a flying charge to injure one\'s opponent. Once the warrior lands to fight, it would begin to make hacking attacks with the weapon.

Sorry if that\'s a bit unclear- it makes since in my head at least...

Oh, and the last thing I will say is that I am not in any way sensitive to constructive critiques. I get annoyed if someone says \"I don\'t like it\" and adds no justification. I do, however, like it if someone says \"The facelessness looks odd to me and makes the mini look unfinished\", as they not only told me what they didn\'t like, but also gave me the reason for why they didn\'t like it. And I will usually try to explain my intentions to the critiquer (spelling?) more so to let them know the thinking process that was behind that part of the miniature as opposed to trying to defend myself.

I\'ll also say I decided to post on these forums because all the other forums I posted on were basically responding with things such as \"OMG THAT\'S AWESOME\" and (Warhammer players who don\'t paint and sculpt that well, or something). I wanted actually feedback on this model, so voila, here I am. I\'ll post more of my creations as they are... created.

I like where your going with the facelessness thing.
I reckon the paint will do it....

What it sort of says is I can\'t really do faces well at the minute..
But looking at your inspiration stuff I can definitely see what your doing...

I am looking forward to seeing this painted .... Good luck...and keep up the good work.

Really very interesting work, Rogue-Gladiator! I\'ve been waiting awhile to see some decent angelic MALE minis on CMON; the only thing I\'ve been able to find so far is some very nice Sanguinius conversions, but... hehe
I agree that the musculature could use some work, as well as a more dynamic pose...aka more motion in the limbs, perhaps? I can see from your more detailed drawings that you have got a sense of motion and \"life\" to your subjects. It\'s just, the position of the left arm especially seems kind of static, you know?
Actually, I\'ve wanted to sculpt a figure like this for a while, but have only managed to work on a centaur so far. NOT finished, of course, and I\'m too chicken to post it on here. lol
And personally, I LOVE the faceless aspect of the mini; and I agree that once painted it will be able to become alot more dynamic.
Hope this is constructive criticism for you. :) Thank you so much for sharing this with us and I look forward to seeing it painted! And please keep posting your future projects!
Krista
P.S. Sorry if I rambled on here. Just got excited to finally see somebody else working on this kind of mini. :)
