New Forum Member - Some of my work

I figured instead of doing the boring old text-only intro thread, I\'d display a model I\'ve been working on recently. It\'s far from complete, but I would like constructive criticism, and that\'s why I decided to start becoming active on this forum. I feel like I have the talent (to an extent) and now I need to start learning better technique, composition, etc.

Here\'s a RT-era \"Space Ork in Power Armor\" that was sold as a Warboss with Plasma Gun at one time, per Stuff of Legends (GW 1991 catalog):

This was the first foray into any sort of layering/blending I\'ve done in a LONG time. Black prime, obviously, was followed by Delta Ceramcoat Quaker Grey. A Citadel Sunburst Yellow layer(s) went on top of that, which was then given a thinned wash of Brown Ink. I wasn\'t at all sure how I was going to paint this model when I started doing it, but I had this weird \"image\" in my head of me sitting there for hours painting it grey and then yellow. lol Needless to say, the simple Grey/Yellow/Ink did not look too hot and I basically started over with a Burnt Sienna / Orange mix (Delta Ceram again), then went up through Orange into the Citadel yellows, doing the final edge work with Bad Moon Yellow. I\'m still working up the courage to try a white prime on the next one.

This is a shot of the model with the face completed. With regards to the highlighting, I got WAY overzealous and sort of went berserk with the greys. While I haven\'t done it yet, I\'ll be blacking all of this back in and having another go at it. Tips, etc. are much appreciated. I\'ve read the tutorial for painting black on Brush Thralls, but sometimes the photos just aren\'t large enough (I run at 1280x1024) for me to make out all the differences.

I played 40K heavily from 1996 - 2000, then got a bit disillusioned during the \"Great Kiddie Invasion\" that happened about that time. I tried to start up an Ork army in 2002, but I just wasn\'t \"feeling it.\" For some reason, back in October I decided it was time to jump back in with both feet, and I have done just that. I do paint fairly slowly, but I\'m \"forcing\" myself to paint at least 2 hours every day, and I usually try for at least 3 - 4 before my neck and back start cramping up. All work so far is done with Citadel brushes (other than some basecoats and the like), but I plan on getting some W&N and Vallejo brushes soon.

Try not to be too hard on me, but I need all the help and information I can get.

Welcome to the forums! I think the best way to introduce yourself is like, this with photos of your work.

Unfortunately I\'m a little braindead at the moment and not seeing miniatures real well, but I think your work here has a lot of potential. Although you\'re definately taking the hard road painting yellow up from black, but you are definately getting some results from it.

Keep posting more of your work! :)

I\'ve never found the GW brushes to be TOO horrible. They just don\'t last very long, even though I hit them with brush soap about twice a week. I\'ve taken to using the oldier, tattier brushes to mix paints on the pallette, then I tuck in with the Citadel Detail brush, which I do the overwhelming majority of my work with.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys! :D As mentioned, I do need a good contrasting color for the plasma gun, and I\'m just not sure what color to go with.

Any suggestions?

welcome Elvis!

welcome to the forums. I really like the yellowish color of the armor. I find yellow to be a real tough color to work with, it always ends up chalky with me.

I\'d say \'blue\' for the contrasting color...

Yellow can ofter have a \'pretty\' look. Your\'s has a grimy, heavy, industrial look. That\'s cool. Keep it up.

Thanks, Shawn! :) Starting with a black undercoat and putting two heavy Brown Ink washes on it certainly helped...and being an Ork player, I\'m still painting up this entire army rather than painting individual models for display.

I tried to slightly overexpose each shot to show the very minute amount of highlighting I did to the black. Unlike the original \"go\", where I literally got stupid with the greys, I mixed up a batch of \"slightly lighter than black\" grey and applied an extremely thin coat of that to edges and other areas that picked up light. When I get a better lighting setup it should become more visible, but I wanted to point out that the \"black\" areas have one stage of highlighting on them, which is extremely subtle and not altogether very visible in these shots.

Apologies on having to use a flash at this point. :(
