To start with Hi Y'all <newbie to the site.
And can i just say now there are a hell of alot of VERY talented people posting on this site and iv seen some paint jobs and conversions i could only dream of recreating:drool:. Awesome job guys n gals
I have been sat looking at this model for some time now with just a plain black carapace, Im a novice at most painting techniques and just cant decide what to do with detailing of the carapace,
As you can see the black has turned into a black and white "mess" idea
This is the start of a Tyranid army that i am starting atm and need help to find a colour combo to be proud of which will include a scythed hierodule that needs some tlc.
Any c&c /suggestions /comments are very welcome:handshake:
P.s so hoping the pic is visible enough to "catch my drift"

Hey and welcome!

When you mentioned tyranid carapace I thought of this little tutorial:
http://www.figurepainters.com/tutorials/carapace/carapace.htm

Might be an idea to try that look with black going through a spectrum of greys....chaos black, codex grey, fortress grey, maybe even to skull white if you want to. Or do it in reverse...start white and go to black?

There's also a tutorial here that shows a similar technique, but more importantly, a tyranid there, with something similar to what you show, but using a tan and blue.

Good luck, and keep posting! :)

Welcome aboard.
I am also a newbie to the site.
You will find alot of usefull stuff is on this site.
I have found tons of information and inspiration
on here.

I agree with Aureo either going black to white or
going from white to black would look good.

re nid help

Thanx for the welcome and the links, i found a few discriptions before of how the layering and bending to be done but seeing pics helps loads compared to just a paragraph or 2,
I have panted one gaunt so-so many times with some quite bad results that i just wasnt happy with, hopefully with the ideas posted i can actualy decide on a colour combo technique that i can carry though the rest of the army, Im very close to getting a carifex ready for the carapace testing so i'll post a pic for you to laugh at
Also i will take the next photo in daylight this time
thanx again

Aww, we're not here to laugh at models...unless you want us to! ;)

No, in seriousness, posting here hopefully will give you a lot of info--there are so many great painters here to chime in, look at their work, see tutorials, etc. And I'm the same way, need to SEE it more than read about it. Glad those links helped.

The best thing to remember about a Tyranid ARMY (one you intend to use on the table to game with) is to keep the color scheme pretty simple and easy to do. painting an army can kill even the best of our souls....and tyranids usually have a MASSIVE army for the points. That was my first army, and I think I got through a half squad of termagaunts with purpley-blue skin and an "intricate" teal to white pattern on the carapace (which I now know would have been decently easy if I had known to dilute paints and not try to use like SIX colors on the carapace). I almost wanted to kill myself as it was my first intro to the hobby and painting in general, and it took me FOREVER to do those few little dudes.

Good luck on your guys and keep posting pics!
