More contrast would help. Also, when you shade it use browns, black and blue's as steel can have a tad of color to it.

Back when the first plastic High Elves came out the serving suggestion was to apply a wash mixed from brown and blue. It did look nice as I recall. Could be a nice place to start, then add black to the areas where even more shaded definition is required.

Lots of shading as mentioned above will give the weighty metal feel that you are after.

A basic way would be to shade using bolt gun metal and highlight up to mithril silver. That would look better than what you have but some additional darker washes will certainly add to the effect.

Undercoating with white is not nessesarily a problem, although metallics do tend to have more sparkle when painted over black.

Definitely, more contrast. Surfaces facing downwards can be pure black if you want. Don't be afraid of going dark and then adding highlights back in, using pure silver for small spots on edges, corners.
