My road to GD Germany 2014 [first pics]

So next year i really want to go to gd germany and will submit entries in a few categories.
Im trying to be optimistic but my main goal of course is a demon(first cut would be awesome and more realistic).

My main focus will be the vehicle category, a space wolves tank.

After getting rid of all the moldlines(double checking with pictures and light from different angles) and cleaning of all the mould release agent I just started building it and heres my first problem:

should i convert it or no conversions at all? add extra bits or not?

it will be a pre/mid heresy tank from forgeworld so the standard kit looks pretty awesome already.
converting it just for the sake of conversions seems a bitty silly to me.

what about the paintjob? grey with black and white markings or red and black?or black and yellow?

i would love some feedback from all you guys(and girls), suggestions and what i should consider.

Your Storm Wolf vehicle is finalist standard already, so you should have no problems for next year in getting a medal.

thanks :)
it actually was a test miniature for the gd entry.
thou there are a lot of things that i will add to the gd entry, like heat marks on the weapons, weathering on the tracks...

also the storm wolf was kinda rushed because i was so excited about it that i really wanted to finish it ^^

Sounds cool. I'm not sure what you have in mind for possible conversions, but I think some minor ones like battle damage would certainly be nice to add. A lot of it depends on the story you want to tell or the feel you're going for. When I think pre/mid heresy I think very gritty and dirty. I also like the look of tanks where the crew have piled supplies (tarps, gas cans, netting, whatever) onto the tank. Just google WWII tank images for some ideas. It's not needed but it's something I think adds character to the vehicle. Again, just depends on what direction you want to go with it.

The important thing to think about is how are you going to make your tank stand out from the rest? Is it by little extras to give it some personality or maybe some neat freehand/design work or flawless weathering or something completely different?

conversionwise i was going throu all my stuff and found a lot of small neat things that would be worth adding.

when it comes to painting and heresy i think dark and gritty as well.
heavy(ish) salt weathering and chipped of paint. freehands are mandatory for me, probably no decals

my two cents after being at the competition a few times. bigger isnt often better. small things = small mistakes = hard to see. in Germany there is no problem with converted/scratchbuilt things (like in uk) and with judge jarhead next year i suppose it will be even more encouraged with crazy conversions.

if there is a deamon next year, that is...

So i'm finally done assembling the tank and also started adding extra bits.

But now i'm really struggling with where to add the steel rope from the SM tank sprue.

I cut it into pieces and made my own cable so I can bend it like needed and as I see fit.

Here are my options and I would really appreciate your opinion on what you guys think:

The cable is obviously not in place yet ^^

Well, I'd go for option 2 or 5. As they look more natural.
Yeah, if you want to go the extra distance on the tankn try adding little realistic detailing. Some antenna, stowage boxes, etc... I read in article somewhere that American tankers in Irak preferred to stow all luggage and non-essentials, like all personal stuff, on the outside stowage rack to have the maximum movement space in the tank. It's preferred to have the room to comfortably reload and risk getting your sleeping bag shot to bits, rather than having no elbow room at all.

For the rest; kill markings, perhaps addon armour to protect those treads a bit, a mine plow,...:)

those were my favourites as well ^^
realism is what im aiming at, especially with all the details.
mine plow came to my mind as well but really doesnt look good on the sicaran :/

i really enjoyed your BA threads btw :)

Cheers mate! I'm glad you like 'm :D

Well, and if you want to go for über-crazy-way-out-there realism, get rid of those WW1 GI-Joe tracks and replace them with a modern suspension & tracks. Y'know to make it look like they can actually ride óver a pebble without shaking the whole tank to bits.
