since i keep getting awful ratings i post this question:
how, apart from better pics, may i improve my stuff?

criticism please, just dont rate the pics horribly without a statement of why.

wips belong in the wip thread, easy mistake, but thats maybe whats going on with this one
bregan, apostate of darkness WIP

http://www.coolminiornot.com/136012

I think its great, so far.
When you take the photo though, try it with a piece of white or grey or sky blue paper behind it, then people can see it in all its glory
hope that helps:D

All a voter can see is what is put in front of him, and thats your photo, if you work on this, so people can see what you have painted you will get the deserved votes.
On this one http://www.coolminiornot.com/136008

We cant see any detail, as its far too dark, and you need shots of the front, back, and sword. All on one combined photo
Hope this helps,:D

Ditto to all that\'s been said, plus, I wouldn\'t take any more photos in front of those tiles, they are reflecting light back into the camara, so the mini\'s look back lit, probably one of the resons they look so dark.
IMHO there\'s so many mini\'s on here, that if the photo\'s even a little dodgy, the subject matters been over done, or what ever little thing, people just won\'t bother to vote, or they\'ll hit 5 and move on.

move your camera further back, it will help to stop the blurring by allowing the camera to focus properly.

use better lighting, at the moment it is too dark.

and don\'t crop parts of the model off when editing.

when your photography is up to scratch then we can comment on the minis better.

I paint my thumb.
Imo, the ratings are not so awful.
By looking at them, everything is nice, but everything could be better, if your aiming above 7s. Better pics would help, but not that much, the people are hard to impress, and they are not catchy enough compositionwise to get the rating the technique deserve.
I think you should be happy with high 6s.

Ratings look pretty close to what they should be to me. Must concur with my collegues as to the photography, so much as to the quality of the paint jobs has to be guessed at because the photography is rather bad (read as dark, distant, and poor settings). Your newest WIP looks like it\'s going to come out really nice though I personally dislike rating WIPs.

so i guess a NMM painted, trompe de loueil painted, highlighted, shaded and based model deserves a 5.4 then?

i really dont think so.

I\'ll assume you\'re referring to this one:

Based on what can be seen in that photograph, I can\'t say that I\'d terribly disagree with that score, no.

Overall, I don\'t see anything in any of the pics that distinguish them as higher that they are currently getting. As has been said, better pics may very well help your scores.

The mere fact of painting metallics without metallic paint does not grant passage into higher ratings. Poorly executed NMM is still first and foremost \'poorly executed\'.

I think most of what has been said is right. Apart from bad lighting tho is picture composition. If you cant see all the mini or the carefully painted magic sword then no-one will know what youve done. Once you get your lighting sorted try doing some editing by adding some close ups of different areas.

Good luck.
