My 4th Sculpt ready

Hi all.

Just wanted to tell you all about my 4th sculpt, Morhin the Mage

I would be very grateful for comments if you please.

I am totally new to sculpting and have recently added my 1st-3rd sculpts as well.

Can anyone tell me about sites or tutorials in sculpting, since I haven\'t found more than the ones on this site?

This last mini is an old RPG character and I\'m sculpting up more minis from that campaign. I\'ll post again when they are ready.

I wish you all the very best.

Cheers! :)

Awesome sculp for fourth time!:eek::eek::eek:
As I plan on starting sculpting,
How good is brown stuff? What do you mainly use it for? Would you recommend it?

Thanks

For Sigmork: Brown stuff is stiffer and hardens faster than green. I guess it makes a great job for weapons and building up minis.

But a word of warning - appareantly, it does not give good ratings :(

My first mini, made in GS has a 6.7,
My second made in GS 6.6,
My third made in GS 6.4,
and this one, which I personally find better, only 5.9?

is it the BS? :(

In real life its markedly a big difference between the first and fourth.

Or am I simply getting worser on sculpting from each go? :)

TBH when i clicked on it, it looked painted at first glance. Badly painted lol
It took me a second to remember that it was a sculpt. A great sculpt.
I reckon that the people who vote very quickly will think it is painted and vote accordingly.

Ah, you may be right matty1001.

It actually does look painted.

I guess I have to add \"Sculpt\" in the heading.

Another question:

Should one undercoat the greens (or browns) in white perhaps for shots?

What do you think?

Thanks Zardan on the help with the brownstuff

I think you should take some photos of just the greens and some undercoated, then create a montage in Photoshop, tutorials are on the site, if you need Photoshop PM me:rolleyes:

Edit: Just noticed you are using montages, sorry, if anyone wants photoshop just me PM me anyway

For Sigmork:

Another thing I forgot to mention about Brown Stuff - it cures rock hard, so you can readily cut, sand paper, file and saw it.

I don\'t think the kind of kneadite effects a rating. The score you have mentioned are good IMHO. Look at it this way, All of your sculpts are above and table-top standard...theres not many who can do that. ;) Plus you have only done 4 which is great progress.
I know, i know theres conversions (some quite simple ones) that are getting a far higher score but it also depends on the genre a mini and if it has a cool factor to it. Some folk just don\'t realise how tricky it is to sculpt or they get Desensitized (sp?) to sculpts due to seeing all the top class sculptors works.

Keep it up!

Great start ;)

Don\'t be disheartened by your rating! It is a great sculpt, the only thing I could really advise would be to make the cloak more square, or look squarer to the eye

I paint my thumb.
I think it\'s hard to get accurate scores for sculpting. Like matty said, when more than one putty is used, it often can be mistaken for a badly painted mini. Priming it grey would undo the confusion.
Can be pretty hard to photo putty too, and the presentation needs to be different to come across, it\'s not the same focuses as a painted mini. Poorly explained, but look up the submissions of very popular sculptors and see also how they present their sculps.
Finally, a lot less people know the difficulty of dealing with putty and since few do sculpts, the popular opinion should matter less, to make a sculpt over 5 probably require more than to paint a mini over 5.
Also for sculpt vs conversion, the fanboys dig to see a conversion of their favorite soldiers or characters. On the other hand ( Talking about fanboy extremists, not gamers.) they won\'t give a crap about anything they can\'t directly associate with gaming. See Scibor\'s stuff, top quality really, but GS work for GS work, he\'s usually rated better than most sculpors, exept those who work for the industry and already have high visibility.
That\'s the lobbyism aspect of the scores, if you\'re not part of a team, or a regular in the forums, or work in the industry, you need real crowd pleasers to get good score, else you are at the mercy of the popular vote and fanboy vote and end up with high 5s...
It\'s more than just quality of the job sadly.
I\'m just getting started with GS myself, so I know the ordeal, so much respect for completing a mini that looks good enough for people to want to paint it.

May sound cheap and interested, but I suggest you spend some time smart talking here and in other mini related forums get a lot of buddies and watch your scores go up :D ;)

A very interesting post GreenOne. You actually made me both reflect, ponder and laugh at the same time. :)

I\'ll seriously consider doing something like this. Still the original \"feel\" of the sculpt will be lost somehow, when doing that.

Good idea. I\'ll do that.

I don\'t think so, seing the different stuffs kinda breaks the magic. Anyway any mini\'s destiny is to be primed and eventually painted, right ?
If you don\'t intend to paint them, send them over, I will :D

You are probably right GreenOne.

Been skimming the forums, especially the photography section, and picked up a few tricks to present minis. I am glad I did that.
