Mordor Troll Chieftain conversion--WIP

Here are some photos of a Mordor Troll Chieftain I am currently working on. I think the base is pretty close to finished. I cut up a plastic Warrior of Minas Tirith to make the dead guy. The little guy is Pippin converted into a running pose.

Any suggestions or tips before I attach the troll to the base?

Very nice looking base. I can\'t think of anything that I would do to add to the base. Just finish up the troll so we can see it. Please and thank you!

BTW welcome to the forums. :D

Thanks for the welcome and the encouraging comments! :D

I really like this website. I\'ve seen so much amazing stuff--it\'s really inspiring. I hope to post updates as I paint my troll to get any suggestions.

What colour is the armour on the troll going to be? Are you going with the traditional silver sullied metallic look or are you going to be outrageous and go for gold? :D I\'m painting everything I have in plate armour maroony and reddish at the moment,it\'s an obsession! ;)

This looks awesome. And Im glad to see someone who likes LoftR Mini also.
I like the base the way it is (and as mentioned before the warrior looks better than most of my showcase style :D ).
And Im glad to see someone who likes LoftR Mini also.

Just looked at your homepage and wanted to know if you finished the morgullord on beast already. Cause Im doing it at the moment and found only a few good pics on the web.

Cant wait to see the painted troll.

Greetings

Thats really rather good :D

Like everyone else said, paint the troll!

I would paint it separate to the base, less room for a \'sweary\' moment ;)

Hello again....

...I\'ve just breezed you\'re site,it\'s pukka! :D You\'re LOTR figures are among the best out there(that I\'ve seen!) I hope we\'ll be getting to see Gandalf the White on here as he\'s astounding, the colour on him is truly beautiful! And as for losing an owl in an earthquake(Aragorn and Arwen) that sort of thing scares us brits!!(Earthquake putty! Brilliant!) Thanks

Gold armor! Now that could be pretty eye-catching! But I was thinking more along the lines of rusty black armor. I\'d like to try painting rust. Does anyone know of any good tutorials on painting rust?

So far I\'ve been painting the troll separate from the base just as Donga666 suggested. I definitely want to avoid one of those \"sweary\" moments!

Regarding the witchking/fellbeast, I have done a little more work on it. So I\'ll try to take some more pictures of it soon.

As for the rust (which I do most like painting at the mom too) I prefer to the article translated by frenchkid from allan c about his lovely nurgle trolls, I dunno if this works on LotR minis also cause its a bit \"cartoony\", anyway heres the link
Oh and I dunno if it works with nmm, never tried it (have to try it on my upcoming ogre).

Here\'s what I have on the troll so far:

scales.jpg

cloth1.jpg

The scales on his back came out more blue than I planned. I think the orange-brown loincloth brings out the blueness. I was thinking of painting his skin in front primarily with Kommando Khaki. So maybe the bluish scales will be OK. Any thoughts?

B
Lookin good....

....is the skin going to be as lightened as the Troll on your site? The scales look fine, not overly blue to me more dark blue/grey. :) I was looking through Allan C\'s gallery late last night, the armour technique examples in there are amazing! There\'s a lot of rust in there for reference! take care!

I like the skin color of the troll, i think its a good contrast to the scales and the loincloth.
As you said the \"lighter\" color of the loincloth does pop out the slightly bluish scales, but i think this doesnt matter, it looks ok imo.
Keep up posting, thanks
Oh, by the way do you plan to do the weapons with nmm?

The way I do rust is the exact way that GW do it on their Ogres as this works realy well. I am sure there is an article on the GW site but it is also covered in WD.
Also I have just started experimenting with a product called Real Rust which is basically a three part medium.
First you mix a base medium with very fine metal powder and then once dried you paint over a rusting agent which is acid based so you have to be a bit careful with it.
I actually saw the product at a Doll\'s House exhibition that I took my wife to recently and had it demonstrated there I am intending to use it on scenery for my gaming room but it would work just as well on minis.

Off-topic, I know...

But are the minis from the Beren and Luthien diorama really from Mithril?! And painted with oils?!

Ok, you\'re my hero

Here is a photo of my progress on the troll. The picture is not so good since I had to use my old 2 MP camera and also one of my lamps broke:

I think the colors are starting to come together.

The tips on painting rust are excellent! Thanks! I\'m really glad I asked. Allan C\'s gallery and tutorial truly are amazing.

Tidoco2222, do you have any examples of anything painted with Real Rust? I\'m really curious to see how it looks.

Galante, thanks! Yeah, those are Mithril minis. I used to like painting with oils, but they dry toooo sloooowwwly (good if your an ent). So I\'ve had to relearn how to paint with acrylics.

Wow, it looks awesome. The colors match really well together as you said. I like to know your color receipe for the nmm armour of the troll. Thanks

You can see well enough from the pics how it\'s going! The armour looks good, and the skin looks like it\'s come along great, what I can see of it! :D
@Tidoco2222--I\'d love to see that rust too ;)
