Monochromatic minis

Does anyone have any pics of monochromatic miniatures? I remember seeing a GW Emperor\'s Champion painted entirely in white and being very impressed. I also vaguely recall seeing a model painted entirely in black in the past.

Also, does anyone have any tips on how to do successful monochromatic pieces? I think they can look very striking, but it looks pretty hard to pull off!

I think it\'s not that difficult really, if you can paint normally you can certainly do a monochromatic paintjob. Most of the problem I think is conceptual - it seems difficult so most people don\'t really try.

As for tips, I\'d just try it - don\'t be afraid to practice on parts to see how you might tackle various surfaces (you\'ll probably have to use NMM or a variation to get it to look right). The simplest approach is just to use black and white but this won\'t give you neutral greys - they\'re quite blueish for almost all black paints - so you either add brown into the mixtures or use other premixed greys to help with some of the intermediary colours.

I agree that it isn\'t necissarily hard to paint in monochrome, however there are some new challenges. As people learn mini painting, I think they tend to focus on color and color selection, and not nearly as much about the tone of those colors or really recognize how important that is to the composition of the piece. When painting monochrome, your only tool now is tone, not color, so you\'re forced to rely on it to produce the piece.

This can be VERY difficult if you\'ve never really spent much thought on tone, or understand how to use it.

I agree with Einion, try it. It is actually a wonderful excersise to get more comfortable with using tones in your composision. I think if you do it, and then you take the leasons learned and apply it back to full color minis, the overall composition of all your work can benefit.

Thanks. That was the Emperor\'s Champion I was talking about. It\'s absolutely incredible. I\'ll give monochromatic painting a go and see how I do... I\'m also going to have to get some practise in with NMM beforehand!

The Emperor\'s Champion looks far more striking than the other model. Do you think that this is partly due to mixing browns into the black like you suggested?

No, Thomas only used black, white, and some greys to do that mini. The brown tints come frome the lighting and the photography. He also put in more contrasts and painted finer details.

Like green stuff said I think this is primarily due to the contrast in the paintwork, as well as being beautifully done overall.
