misbehaving dullcoat spray

have you ever had dullcoat misbehave? i just did up a Battletech Hunchback in a nice chocolatey brown, with a 3-layer drybrush. and when i dullcoated, the $#%$@& mech became darker and i lost a lot of the panel detailing!

would a drybrush over the dullcoat still stay in place? this is a play mini, not a display mini, and its got to withstand grubby fingers and out-of-control D6 slamming into it...

send it to the corner....

I have had my dullcoat misbehave, but usually the main culprit has been
\"not shaking the can\" enough.

One painter once told me to shake it for about 3 minutes straight....

I don\'t know if this works, but my biceps are now much larger, and I haven\'t had any more misbehaving dullcoats!!

lollollol

It does seem to me that whevever I spray that stuff on, the colors seem to \"tighten up\". It seems to pull everthing together nicely, I can\'t explain it any other way....

The only way that I know of to make sure the new drybrushing would stay on is with another light spray of dullcoat....

Good luck!

There are lots of threads about this..

Shaking is very important, as is ambient temperature and humidity. Both spray can and model need to spend some time in the same environment to ensure thay are the same temperature. It is a recipe for disaster spraying a warm mini with a can taken from a freezing garage.

If yours is a playing piece, I am not sure dullcote is the answer. Dullcote IMO should only be sprayed very thinly and this will not protect a playing piece. If you spray dullcote thickly you could easily end up with the effect you describe.

I would try perhaps giving it one more very light dusting. This may work, but it may not. If you do it light enough, at least it will do no further harm:D

For playing pieces, I would recommend that you give a good protective coat with a polyurethane gloss varnish. Then give the lightest of dustings with a dullcote to remove the shine. That way you should get the best of both worlds;)

I found a trick a while ago for dullcote if things go wrong. A bit of paint thinner (Testors is what I have) will help get rid of an excessive dull or cloudy finish. Just use a cheap brush and a small amount of thinner.

cheers,

Don\'t ask why...

The title of the thread made me do it.

about the cartoon...

Dennismech...I really dig the cartoon, but something in it bothers me.

Why in the last panel is the Dad, Mom, and little Suzy so happy, but the young man seems so.....well disconnected?

Does he feel he is being replaced by the Dullcoat? Is Suzy garnering all the love and adoration? Does Uncle Bobby dress up in a Clown Outfit and scare the boy?

Please explain....:(

The cartoon is awesome. I\'ve had similar problems due to high humidity as well, the acetone solvent used in the dullcote is hydrophyllic (attracts and absorbs water) which causes \"fuzzy dullcote disease\" GW matte isn\'t quite as bad for this in my experience but plan on cleaning out the spray nozzle with a paperclip often as it WILL clog.

If I actually remember to turn the can over and spray until only air comes out, then I don\'t get clogs in my GW Matte... of course I do forget about half the time, so it does still tend to clog up on me after a while...

Isn\'t it obvious?

Why, that\'s because he\'s the only one who sees through the Dullcoat\'s friendly (though rather dull) matte finish, to it inner evil side that wants to cloud up your minis and make the paint run! Oh how deliciously evil...

Due to its general non-conformist behaviour my spray dullcote has been punted afar (although I think mine retired to the trash can). I only use the brush on type now. It takes a little longer but other then that hasn\'t given me any of the problems it\'s evil twin has.

That little boy is evil.

His name is Fernando, and he cannot hear the drums.

I have made many mistakes in the Matte finish department. Coincedentally, my wife\'s last boyfriend, prior to meeting me, was named Matt. He caused much head ache and anguish in the year leading up to our wedding. He still torments me in the form of Testors.

I ruined 5 of my best minis by spraying them with matte finish when the humidity was over 90%. It didn\'t help that I gave them a coating thick enough to be measured. Now they all have a grayish-white tinge.

Matte be damned.

Since then I do as Finn17 says. I spray the tiniest little waft of finish into the air, then I pretend to run my minis through it. This way they get just enough finish to do nothing and still protect nothing.lol

By the way, I am always on the lookout for a matte finish that can actually protect my minis. Any suggestions?

ps. What is this about a brush on matte? Who makes it? I don\'t care about cost.

The boy isn\'t evil, merely lost in a sea of dullcote

I spray any dodgy varnishes very lightly on the model to see that it doesn\'t do any damage, then I just add a layer on each time until i\'m satisfied that it\'s been coated properly.

I am pretty sure Testors still makes the brush on \"dullcoat\". In fact, I didn\'t even know there was a spray on variety until I began checking out this site.

Oh, and welcome back Barkel!, haven\'t heard anything from you lately!:D

Barkel,

Try dry-brushing the cloudy figs with some enamel thinner. I had some horrible ones get fixed this way. The thinner seems to release the trapped humidity.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thanks Elouchard, I will try that this weekend. I thought they would all be getting an acetone bath!

It is good to be back, Supervike. Every couple of months I burn out on painting and return to music for a couple of months, then back again. It\'s a never ending cycle of frustration and reward on both sides. Come February, when I enter my third decade on THIS planet, I will probably disappear for a while so that I can ponder where I am going in life. Ultimately I\'m sure I will decide that the direction I\'m heading is completely pointless and that it is finally time for me to throw caution to the wind, abandoning job and financial security, to strike out my own. Then my daughter will look up at me and say, \"I\'m hungry,\" and I will be sucked back into the world 9-5. Whoa is me.

Then after I surrender my plans for harry-carry I\'ll be back to this wonderful site to escape.lol
