Miniature #4 - An Orc that looks like a Goblin (finally something with more colors!)

Ok, so here is what I have so far... Again, primed white, base coated, and some sad attempts at highlights. And MAN, even over a white primer (that looks grey), yellow takes a long time to show up.

Again, I didn't concern myself with mold lines, though it looks ok so far.

Also, Reaper's not shipping their paints now, 'till March, so I'll probably buy some individually, or maybe the learn to paint kits...

Any advice, suggestions, critiques?

Ok, the brown highlights look like dried mud splashed on in the large shot, but I think they look a 'bit better in actual size :(

Huh, I forgot the eyes and the teeth, too... And man is it sloppy. I think I'm in the wrong hobby, or I need to start NOT photographing what I'm doing :(

The really sad thing is I just dropped $40 on castle ravenloft for more minis (and the game, of course).

btw, how do you do metal highlights? I added just a drop of white, and it killed my silver :(

The highlights look like you've used too thick of a paint. And I'm one to talk, as I can't seem to get that right even.

As for the Reaper paints, little sad to see them not be able to show up for me as well (albeit just one of the sets), but that's life in production. Just take a look at lead times on titanium some time ("Oh, we'll get something for you in maybe six months. If we get more requests. Otherwise, we're looking at 12-18 months.")

Anyway, mini-rant over. I'd take a look at the colors that you'll be getting from the Kickstarter and buy some of the other colors. I get the impression that you're stuck without a local hobby store nearby, so online looks to be the key here. Normally, the suggestion is to buy whatever brand your local store has so you can have that instant gratification and help support them at the same time. You're freed from that, so I'd do what I just suggested.

For metal highlights you need to add a lighter metallic I believe. Or that's what I usually do. I'm pretty sure a non-metallic paint won't really do well. Not sure.

buy a pot of vallejo metallic medium and use as edge highligh. cant go any brighter than that. i wouldnt add regular white paint to my metallics for highlightning.

While its very true that adding white to highlight metallics just doesn't work, the opposite is true for shadows - adding black can work very well to shade metallics. If you shade it enough, the unshaded part looks bright and highlighted :) (in other words, if you don't have a brighter silver, mix some black into your base coat, then highlight with the metallic silver you have now.)

I also think I am going to wash the leather parts with a sepia wash I've made, to see if that may work to soften the edges...

Ok, and now thanks to bloodhowl (for the static grass), and vallejo for some paints, I've updated the mini a 'bit...

This is the upgraded original, metals were redone, and some static grass applied...

The base looks a lot better. Amazing what a little detail can do. And the sword looks very good as well.

The base looks really good. I have the same problem with yellow that you have seen. I have been told that the Reaper base coat yellow covers good, but i have been unable to get any.

After about 10 attempts locally i found a mustard color from an obscure brand that worked well (tabletop masters if i recall correctly). With that on i was able to highlight with the weaker yellows.

I agree with MIJ on the metallics. Whites tend to get chalky. I had a boatload of mithril silver and use inks to darken it up for my base coat, then i use the pure mithril silver for the highlight.

Heya dude. Looking like you are making good progress. Keep making mistakes and then learning from it. Tis the best way to move forward. For the yellow, I use Iyadun Darksun which is Games Workshop foundation paint and as such it goes on well and leaves smooth coverage.
