Matt varnish?

I've been getting into my blending more of late, and have been playing about with flow enhancer and matt medium. The problem with the latter is that I can't find anywhere that does it as a consistency similar to paint rather than a gel. This makes it a pain to mix together with water and paint (wasting a lot of both rather than testing my patience), plus it can make it hard to judge ratios (lack of practice I know).

Then last night while varnishing a model, I wondered if I could simply use this as an extender?
I'm using the vallejo model colour matt varnish.

Anyone ever tried this and if so were the results any good?

So you'd be looking for a fluid matt medium yes? There are a few of these made - Golden definitely offer one - although how matt they are will vary a little from brand to brand.

But using what you already have, if you got yourself some distilled water (or boiled the heck out of some tapwater!) you could make a batch up to the right consistency and it'll keep well as long as it's stored in an airtight container.

Yep. It's going to be basically acrylic or vinyl medium at the end of the day, although it might use a slightly different resin it should work. Whether it'll make for a good brushing character, you'll only see by trying it.

I actually prefer gel retarder myself.
I use a medium called liquifying medium ( atelier interactive ) for pin washes which is high quality acrylic medium and thin.
