Im new to this forum so I figured I\'d put up an easy little tutorial on making boxes/crates. Lemme know what you people think.
Since it was quick and easy to do, heres an easy box making tutorial, step by step. The pics are a bit large, I will try to fix that when I can.
Materials: Exacto, Wood Strips, Crazy Glue, Ruler, Styrene Sheet
Since my dad does tons of woodworking, I got some scraps of wood, 3/4\" wide and 1/16\" thick. Balsa wood, Styrene, or ABS could all be substitued.
First I determined what size of box I wanted and cut a styrene sheet to 1 3/4\" x 2 1/4\". I only used styrene beacuse I had some scraps here at my desk. This is the only step where I measured, from this point on the ruler was only used for scoring with the exacto.
The styrene base was used to measure the lengths of the box sides on the strips. The longest sides cut first, then the shorter lengths to join between. The short lengths are not cut to the width of the styrene, 2 strip thicknesses were subtracted.
All sides cut.
Sides then glued to base
Since this will house some ordinance I made, a quick test fit to verify size
Now I use the ruler to cut thin lengths, about 1/8\" width by eye
I place the strips against the box to determine length to cut (doing this every time will ensure a tight fit, if you were to measure ahead of time and cut you may end up with ugly gaps) I start with the two ends of one side then the lengthwise pieces to fit between.
Repeat this process for each side of the box, each side will have a frame
Similar to above, place a strip against the box side to cut the diagonal brace
Repeat this process for each side of the box and youre done. If you want a lid or top then you just have to do the above two steps again for the top.
When finished I gave it a coat of pva to help seal the entire piece as this will be molded later.
I made the lid seperate to make it a little more versitile, but still using the same method.
So here it is again all finished with one and with a group shot with the other sizes ive made
Hope you found this helpful.
Enjoy and have fun making some boxes.
