Making a Space Marine more \"Gothic\"?

I\'m working on a Salamanders chapter of space marines (a somewhat bright-ish green with gold and black trim). But I\'m running into a problem with my models. They end up looking to...clean...or cartoony. They don\'t look like battle-hardened warriors of the 41st millenium.

How can I achieve this effect? How do I make my marines look individually more epic and gothic looking? (thinking along the lines of Juan Diaz sculpts and some folks like Prophet here on cmon)

Weathering effects are great ways to make the model look battel hardened without atcually changing the sculpt. But remember, marines wash their armor after battles, and repaint chipped parts, so dont make it too dirty. Also you can make little nicks and maybe use a hand drill to put some bullet holes in it?

To make any color look a little drab and duller than usual, add it\'s complement (the color sdirectly opposite of it on the color wheel), in this case red to the main color. You could also prime black, which tneds to darken any color put over it. Finally, you could thin down some dark brown or yellowish brown (like Dark Flesh or Leperous Brown) and give the armor a thin coat, which will make it look like dust and grime.

Hope this helps! :p

Do a google for gothic painting, and see what the artists were doing between 1300 and 1500 approx. There is alot of bright stuff, and then some that is darker looking. You might find some interesting colours to target.
