Looking for Ultra-fine Ballast

I am looking for sources for ultra-fine ballast. The ballast I am using for basing my miniatures looks like large rocks compared to the scale of the miniature. Anyone have any suggestions?

model railroad shops carry ballast in several sizes.

Home improvement (home despot, lowest, diy, etc) should have a bag of play sand for a couple of bucks. Life time supply there.

Ask about a bag of fine sandblast sand or extra fine.

Get a flour sift (kitchen supply) and go to the beach. (wash what you bring home or it will smell for a while).

The stuff I use is local product, brought in via airmail, mixed with 3 sizes of ballast.

Course, right now I'm going for a desert floor look, so it works.

Granddad!
clay based cat litter, I made some small sieves out of plastic pots (yoghurt pots would do) with different size holes in each, I can grade the cat litter from 'boulders' to 'fine sand'

Water down some white glue, paint it on where you want the texture, put on a bunch of baking soda and then when it's dry, rub it off. The remnants should be very fine. Very GENTLY drybrush.

I hadn't considered making my own sieves. Great idea.
