Looking for ideas - Ancient Greek-esque

Hey mini gurus

My mate is about to kick off an RPG campaign with strong Ancient Greek and Roman influences. Not sure yet if further east or south will come in to play (I'll push for it just for colour).

I've spent ages poring over the Wargames Foundry line (gee a bit there!) and I'm not really seeing much for PCs and NPCs. The beasties are pretty darned sweet though.

Does anyone know of producers/lines that would have a bunch of characterful minis for such a setting? I'm coming to suspect that I'll have to venture to heroic scale for characters and take what I can get for monsters and other XP-fodder.

Poking around the cool mini store I found these two:

Tale of War has some more (http://www.taleofwar.com/shop/category.php?id_category=7 and http://www.taleofwar.com/shop/category.php?id_category=9)

Hasslefree has some stuff (http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?category=miniatures~fantasy-humans). Kevigula should work. The first artemis is 40mm, but there's another smaller scale one. She might not work for your group though... depends on what sort of NPCs you're looking for. =P
Scibor has a bunch of roman themed figures for a sci-fi setting... probably won't help you but you never know what you'll find.
Here are several from Reaper (https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Greek/latest). There are others there too if you poke around their site. (https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/helena/sku-down/02738, https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/centurion/sku-down/02790, https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/centurion/sku-down/03267)
Morland Studios has a version of Perseus and I've seen their Kreimhild used as a Greek goddess (http://morlandstudios.com/?page_id=226)
And, as you said, there are a lot at Wargames Foundary... though nothing great for characters.

If you're not in any rush, keep an eye out for the release of Arena Rex. The kickstarter ended a little while ago, but the figures will hopefully be available around the end of the year. There are a lot here that could work for you (take a look at the Legio XIII faction) and characters if you venture farther south (and perhaps east too if they release more factions). Be aware these are 35mm scale.

Err what bailey03 said. Those Reaper zodiac figures are a great start!

Hmm, Scibor has some good spartan and roman bitz. the GW Tomb Guards box has a bunch of good shields and ancienty weapons. It's all sort GW scale though. Green stuff togas should be pretty easy :)

Putting in "Hoplite miniature" into google produces these results:

From what I remember ancient Greek warfare sucked. Couldn't see much out of the helmet, it was hot, and battle consisted of getting in the wall shield formation and charging the other guys, then devolving into hacking and slashing anyone around you, since most didn't have decorations until later on. How dare the other guys not be color-coded! :p

Luckily my character is more of a ranger-type ;-)

Lot's of great leads, thanks team. Will defo be hitting up Reaper and Hasslefree, plus some plastics. I'll have to chat with the GM fella and have him pick out minis for a handful of important recurring NPCs. I wouldn't mind if one of the independant city-states had a Sparta-feel to it led by a ferocious warrior-king! Darksword have a few I might be able to sneak in too.

Pretty sure a good handful of plastics will end up in the shopping basket, even if they just hang out with the Roman plastics I already have.

It's quite a different scenario to be shopping for very specific looks for RPG use, rather than just buying really cool stuff I want to one day paint. Luckily, no one in the group has ever role played with miniatures so pretty much any paint job will be good enough for the group.

Exciting stuff!
