live role playing

Ever get one of those crazy little thoughts, a new idea that you will never develop.

I was just discussing my friends live role playing (vampire), he was amused that when my wife asked me what it involved I had told her that basically it was people running around saying \"weeeee I\'m a vampire\".

Anyhoo it suddenly occured to me that someone should make a live roleplaying game based on the Rocky Horror show. Can\'t say I would play it, but the thought of a bunch of guys running around saying \"weeee I\'m a sweet transvestite\" is to good a oppurtunity to miss up. So if anyone wants to develop that idea, please fell free. :D

I know some people that might actually play it, they play in the annual \"Picture Show\" at the Drive in outside Champaign, IL (University of Illinois)

That sounds like a really boring game to me. Can\'t we play something where I run around wearing a suit and being manly? Dressing in women\'s clothes and screaming \"Weeee I\'m a sweet transvestite\" is far too close to reality! ;)

Aren\'t you supposed to LARP RHPS every Halloween anyway? Least it was the last time i went. Disturbing. Nothing quite like 40yo \"heavy set\" men in lingerie.

I\'m trying to be a vegetarian, so I wouldn\'t be able to share the Meat Loaf. But LARPing looks like fun, albeit very geeky fun.

There was a forum running a RHPS RPG a few years back. I\'ve been in a RHPS shadow cast for about 7 years now.:D

I\'m seriously doubt I could ever do LARP.

Even watching others do it would be too cringe inducing for me to stay.

But, I am morbidly curious about it.....I wonder if Youtube has any clips to see....

It\'s just like improvisation when acting.. however it can be pretty funny when people try to be historically correct and speak in an \"old tongue\". Not many people can get away with that without sounding pretty ridiculous... well at first anyway.

Ask and you shall receive:
LARP

You have to watch the whole wizard\'s duel segment. It is hilarious, how do they know when they\'re supposed to fall down?

Many moons ago, back when I was about 14, I think, I went to a PBM (Play By Mail: a couple of my friends played one called Gang vs Gang) convention in Sheffield. As well as all the PBM stuff there was a group of LARPers, so we had a go. We got armed with swords (only thick cardboeard wrapped in foam and gaffer tape), and were led by the GM outside on to the streets around the polytechnic (as it was then). It was a bit of fun, except for my friend who got his watch broken.

I didn\'t see the episode but there was a series on tv here where comdedians had to spend some time with various groups and then come up with a standup routine to perform for them. One was with some LARPers. I saw him on a chatshow talking about it. Basically it was a group of 30 or so people getting dressed up and having a laugh, and then drinking a fair bit. Most don\'t take themselves seriously.

You\'ve just described Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

[posh] Let it be known that I am a reenactor! We dont have anything to do with those other people except for someone to clobber at Tewkesbury![/posh]

LARP can be very very good but usually due to the complete lack of social, mental or physical skills displayed by most people who take part in it, it usually ends up bad or worse

I did watch it, it was a good laugh... and here it is linky winky

I found that LARP works out nice (and not too embarrasing ;)) when:
- There\'s not a huge amount of combat involved (\'cause face it, most people suck at it)
- Body prosthetics and such are kept to a minimum (\'cause face it, most of it looks pants)
- And \"ye olde Englishe\" is not required (\'cause of the \"ye olde Englishe\" thing. )

Which makes certain RPGs, like Vampire or Call of Cthulhu a bit more immersive, than, say, D&D- like stuff. More focus on the character and his/her motivations and interactions than worrying about the condition of your foamsword. And as there is less to go with \"monsters\", the orga can take their time and make quality stuff like that sweet golem from a few posts up.
But that\'s just me. :D

I thought that they were gonna burn that poor bugger at a stake when he said he was an athiest, there was genuine pain in their faces when their conversion to \"elm\" didn\'t seem to work.lol

Only time I\'ve ever run into a larp was at a game con in Ohio (got 2nd in Jenga woot) and was almost runover by a fella done up like a vampire, after sayin excuse me I got hissed at and told I didn\'t exist.... Kinda left me feelin a lil odd.
