LED help

Looking to install some led lights to give some models a little zip. I've purchased some 3mm leds for artillery pieces and some 0806 size leds for small applications, at this point I'm not sure what kind of battery and battery holders to use. I know I want to use button batteries( i assume at least) to do this but I'm open to any suggestion as to what has worked for you guys and where you get them. Any links to articles or anything of that nature would be greatly appreciated as well as its my first attempt at this. Thanks

To know what kind of batteries you need you first have to specify what voltage the LED's need to function and what strength of resistors you have available. :)

You will need to provide us the Forward voltage of the LED, normally white LED around 3.2-3.4V, red LED 2.2-2.4V. After in order to balance the current going through your LED you will need to set up a resistor value with the following formula Vr=R.If, so in order to define your resistor you will need to know the typical current of the LED (3mm and 0806 often 20mA). To calculate Vr, use the following formula Vr=Vbattery-Vf(LED). So your battery voltage MUST be higher than your LED forward voltage.

Now you can calculate R with the following formula R=Vr/If=(Vbattery-Vf)/If, after you will need to pick up the closest standard Resitor value (i.e. 150ohm).

Also to be known 0806 has a beam angle of 120 degrees, not focus, good for general atmosphere, backlighting, etc... 3mm has 15 degrees, 30 degrees, 60 degrees LED more for directional lighting and spot effect.

You can PM if you need some advice for your installation. I am developing LED products all day long.

Why?
I know that's a pretty big question in a three letter word, but why go to all the trouble and expense if it's for a game table piece?
If it's for a competition piece, judges regard that as a "Gimmick" rather than serious painting work.
Far better for both Table & Competition to do good painting jobs which make the model stand out as quality.

The answer may be "Because." And that is perfectly acceptable.

Some things cry for lights: Starships, dropships, hover vehicles, etc.

Some things Yes!
Enterprise , Voyager, A Steamrunner class starship those I totally agree with, but in tanks makes me think of "Friction action" toys of the 60's/70's.

WHY: I was looking for ideas for my chaos dwarf army i'm starting on and came across a few very well done armies that had leds and thought that it would go well with some of the magma cannons and the iron deamon. Its also just something different, just to mix things up a bit. I usually paint my armies to a above table top standard usually they score in the low 7's/high 6's here, nothing ground breaking but the time/quality ratio is probably as maxed out in the quality section as it can go if im going to finish the army this decade for my skills, others I'm sure can do much better in no time flat.

specs:• Red 0805 SMD LED
• Lens Color: Water Clear
• View Angle: 110 Degrees
• Forward Voltage: 2.1-2.3v
• Current: 20mA
• Size: 1.4mm x 1.25mm or 0.08'' x 0.05''
• Luminosity: 170mcd

3mm are red,Typical MCD is 5.0. This 3mm Red LED has a typical wavelength of 700nm.

Size is T1 or 3mm
Red lens color
Viewing angle is 25°
28mA (max)
Typical Voltage is 2.25, with a maximum voltage of 2.6V
