Kirr's WIP - Ulthwe Army

Hello all!

First time posting so I'll start a thread for my Ulthwe's Army in progress. I'm a beginner in painting (and in warhammer in general) so I'll appreciate any comments and critics on my work.

So, I've started with my crimson hunter (not in my list so I can experiment a lot with it)... as you can see, I struggled with my ceramic white (paint seems old, think I'll need to buy a new one).

Hi Kirk, welcome to the madhouse.

White is a difficult colour to paint over black. As you can see it doesn't cover well well.

Your best bet is to keep your paint thin and paint the area grey first, then white. Grey tends to cover a lot better over black so it's a better base for the white. You'll need several thin layers as well to get a consistent coat

Looking forward to seeing you progress

Thanks!

I'll keep that in mind! Since I've kept all my crimson hunter in pieces for the painting process, I can easily just unpaint that part and start over!

Hey! No, didn't saw this one. Well, I was more thinking of doing a white base coat then using agrax earthshade or using seraphim sepia to give the white a more parchment-like color of the ulthwe craftworld.

You'll find that using a shade will pool and you'll get an uneven finish. Best bet for Ulthwe is to use a beige colour rather than white.

Same rules apply for painting a light colour over black though.

Hey! Thanks for your feedback guys! Here's the status of my crimson hunter (sorry light is not so good). So I've been checking and found out that the best way to paint Ulthwe's army was base coating with Zandri Dust then layering it with Ushabti Bone. So far, it's looking nice. I added a layer of Auric Armour Gold onto the Ulthwe Rune on the wing. Gems are Leadbelcher base coated with a semi-layer of Stormhost Silver and will use techinal Spiritstone Red to paint them.

That's a good start. That Ulthwe eye looks nice on that wing. The biggest tip i could give is to thin your paints a bit more so you don't end up with paint stripes that much. It's a bit harder doing light over dark, but that just means you'll have to put down more but thinner layers. On complex shapes, but also on large flat areas actually, it pays off to concentrate on the edges first, to get those as tight as possible, and then paint in the inner areas.

Thanks for the comments! I'll watch for thoses paint stripes. I'm thinning my paint but I don't know yet the treshold of where it will be too liquid or not.

Well, it depends a bit from paint to paint but they it it's best to aim for the consistency of full milk or cream.

Hey, here's another update on my Ulthwe Crimson Hunter. As you can see, I've change my mind on few things. I've switched the color of the belly of the plane so I've re-primed it with Zandri Dust then layered Ushabti Bone on it. Since it's my first vehicle that I'm painting, I'm learning a lot in terms of Must Do and Must Not. As for the paint stripes (there's quite much under the wings), I think it was because I was not yet thinning enough my paint. Starting to get better now. I also found that I made a big mistake: I didn't base coat my crimson hunter with Abaddon Black after the Chaos Black primer... because of that, I can't add abaddon black to cover mistakes or make correction.

Next step: Finish all the gems and highlight the black part of the crimson hunter. Also, if you guys have any idea for the cockpit, I want it opaque but I don't know what to do... :S

Looking good Kirr. The black GW spray being different to the black paint has been an issue for years now, don't worry about it too much for very minor corrections, but it's a good lesson learned.

The scheme is looking really nice. Ulthwe black and beige is lovely on the smooth eldar vehicles. For the cockpit, perhaps try your hand at feathering a blend. Red would tie in nice with the gems so you could start at black or dark red and blend up to bright red. Lots of thin layers with a very gradual change in the colour mix. It's a nice smooth surface so could be good for practice.
