Khorne Armour

I have a converted unit of Skullcrushers, and I'm just starting to paint them. I want to go for a deep metallic red colour for the armour plates, and bronze for the raised areas, symbols etc. Just looking for a quick bit of feedback and any ideas before I go ahead and paint them since there are only 3 and I want to get it right.

Already I am thinking instead of edging it silver I should edge it gold instead, keep a darker frame. Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Edit: Here is another shot with the rest of the bear armour done. It is pretty close to what I want but something about it is a bit off and I'm not sure what... Not quite a deep enough red? I don't know how to fix that though. I have magenta ink and bhaal red wash, plus I used a purple wash and devlan mud.

Hmm...it can be tough to tell what's going on exactly. I would use GWs Khorne red, highlight by using a flesh color and shade with a dark navy blue, like VMC Dark Sea Blue. It may be the photos, but your overall finish appears a bit mottled and not very clean. A few things can cause this: not enough layers of a very diluted paint, or the paint itself could be too diluted for you. I say this because the surface looks like mine before I apply enough layers.

Red is tricky, of course, but the fact that you're using a deep red makes it a bit easier. You can highlight with a traditional red, rather than making it pinkish or orangish by adding lighter colors.

I personally favor gold or brass with red.

Thanks for the feedback. The mottled look is actually deliberate and a result of me concentrating the wash in some spots rather than keeping it smooth, I can't remember what piece I got it from but one Khorne miniature on CMON had a spotted or mottled look.

I think the biggest problem is the large fairly flat armour pieces on the bears. I don't know how to highlight them. So I am considering an orange/yellow lightning effect on those parts and something close to what I have started for the riders, this will also help separate mount from rider. But I am still having trouble making the actual surface look like it is metal and not just red paint. Would gloss varnish help or just make it look wet?

It's a panzer bjorne! I'd stay away from gloss if I where you, it could be good for making a wet effect or glass or gemstones, but not for metal. Try looking at massive voodoo or something for a metal article, do you want to do NMM or TMM?

Never understood Khorne worshipers wearing red, blood doesn't show as much on that color.

I would paint them in white or bone, to better show all the blood they get covered in.

Almost Perftec! Aw, crap.

The poor souls are color blind as they see red all the time thanks to the butchers nails so they think they are wearing black. Of course no one wants to tell them the truth for obvious reasons...
