Khador Marauder, need help improving

I don\'t remember where I read it, or who said it, but somewhere on the CMON forums I remember hearing someone say to \'always push yourself with each mini... pick something to practice and go at it\'. Sage advice indeed.

Having said that, I tried to learn some things with this mini:

1) Painting annoying colours. It\'s a big swath of orange, red, and white, traditional annoying colours all.
2) Weathering. Paint chips and scuff marks primarily. Some rust spots on the metal.
3) Freehand. Simple freehand really, just some numbers and faction symbols, but I usually don\'t do freehand, so it was a bit of a challenge.

On to the photos and self-critique

I put this in WIP because while he is more or less finished, he\'s not varnished up yet and I intend to make a few more corrections with him.

I\'m reasonably happy with how the general paintjob turned out. I think the highlights and shadows are relatively accurate. However, the painting could have been more smoothly blended. This paintjob was primarily done with layers rather than any sort of blending technique.

Need improvement on weathering and freehand. The problem with my weathering is that some look authentic (like cracks and scuffmarks), but others just look like light or dark lines on the mini. Not sure how to improve that short of better brush control. Same with the freehand, I wish I was a bit neater.

One thing I\'m really unhappy with is the metals, especially the boiler thing at the back. I don\'t think I highlighted, shaded or did anything properly with it, and am at a bit of a loss.

That\'s where I turn to you, wonderful CMON forumites. Have you any advice on how I should improve/fix this mini? Is there anything else that I missed, could have improved, or was good at? Anything I should look out for?

C&C Welcome, and again thanks for taking the time to read through this very long post. ;)

what are you talking about man!!!!!

this is really well painter, a few washes on the orange to tie the blending up bit apart from that nothing needs to be done, this could score in the high sevens!

I do belive that would be Boltman/silphid aka Vincent Hudon\'s motto.

Nice work, the white scratches in the dirty white look very nice. Some of the lighting is a bit off, for example the top of the mini is very zenithal, but on the thigh plate the light is coming from the left hand side.

Hopeing to pick up some of this stuff myself, i presume it is metal?

Alex

Edit: those metals are freaking awsome!

nick: Washes? Check, will have to put that on my to-do list.

hobbit: to be honest I decided on an orange scheme because I found a really good pagecoat for it.

Orange: P3 Bloodstone. It\'s a nice saturated colour that goes on relatively well. Sometimes it seperates though, which is annoying. Highlight up to Firey Orange (although I think P3 Khador Highlight could probably work also), shade down to Scorched Brown with a touch of black.

White: Foundation Khemri Brown -> Kommando Khaki -> P3 Menoth White Highlight

Red: Scorched Brown/Scab Red Mix -> Scab red -> Blood red

Alex: Hmm you\'re right about the highlighting. Need to paint my light sources more consistently then. PP\'s models for Warmachine and Hordes are pretty cool tho. =)
