Keratis warrior - Rackham

Assorted WiP and finished models

Hi all,

After long time I decided to signup with CMON.

I used to paint almost every day but then life got in and I stopped.

I solidy started again and trying little by little to get back to my level.

I had a fresh start and I looked at painting like I was learning again, trowing away some of my old techniques and picking up new. I dropped the black bases in favor of white/zenithal base (make it black then airbrush white). I then experimented by only glazing on this base but then I come back to the old layering method. The glazes were missing something in my opinion, but I took some of that knowledge to switch from simple layering to layering + glazing.

My last WIP is this Keratis warrior.

I used here some techniques I made up with layering + glazing for the flesh. I tried to create some good contrasts on the armor, that was one of my weak points, I always used to start from a extremely black color and build up to a base color (like for red I would do black + dard red, then add more red until I had the base color and then adding a brighter red, but never daring to go up to that). This time I tried to go up 'till white and then wash again and then use white again for extreme lights.

Another of my weak points is metal. I tried for a while a NMM technique but didn't give me the expected results, so I switched to true metallic. My metals are really bad and I think the use of this technique put me light years ahead of my "splotch metal, highligth and wash" technique. My metals aren't still satisfying but they look WAY better now.

Enough word, here's the model. Almost complete, just missing few details.

Looking foward to hear comment and suggestions how to improve my painting.

Hi Giuseppe - welcome to CMON and the forums. :)

I don't know if it's the photograph, but the armour seems to have lost some of its deepest shadows. I like the purple tone you've brought in in places - possibly use that and a dark red and glaze into the recesses between the armour plates etc. I think that will lift it a bit.

I'm a novice at metals myself, so I'll leave wiser people to comment on that.

Welcome to the wips. The skin and reds look good. To add some more contrast glaze some green into the shadows of the red (it sounds screwy, but the complimentary color really helps bring the red cloth alive).

I'm terrible with photos. I think this photo looks ok, maybe isn't really like looking at the model live but gives a good idea. I think.

I'll try that, in a way it makes sense.

Awesome - he's looking nice and menacing all completed.

If I may ask: where do you source your models locally? I'm trying to branch out from only GW minis (as you know, they're the easiest to get your hands on) and I'd prefer to buy locally (in SA) than have to deal with our weak currency by going international.

I don't source models locally. I buy from discount games Inc for warmachine / hordes. The keratis warrior are out of production from my Rackham collection. I have probably around 200 models in my home country so when I go on holidays I bring them some.

Since you're a painter I suggest you to move away from gaming models at all. Try to see if you can get models from companies who don't make games like ral partha. Their models are usually cheaper.

You can try anyway esswex models in Johannesburg I saw on their showcase some 54 mm models but no idea if they carry stock.

I also recently backed the sde kickstarter so it's about another 100 models or so coming my way next Xmas.

Unfortunately in SA there are no local models companies where is other countries especially Italy and Spain you can find 2 or 3 local producers.

Also it's sad to see several local shops closed down since isn't really a profitable business. They don't carry much stock, takes lots of time to deliver and got high prices so my game community ended up buying exclusively online at least we get 30% off from the official price.

Thanks Giuseppe. I've gotten a few things from Esswex before. I paint gaming minis because they're available - but any model with character and a good sculpt will attract me. I'll take a look at the website you mention. Thanks.
