Jumping right in

So I haven\'t painted in years and have recently begun my foray into minis again. I used to paint Ral Partha stuff and had never seen any of the techniques used these days. So I decided to go for it and did a bit of conversion on this reaper mini I bought with an overall plan in mind. I wanted to show the mage casting an Ice type spell with OSL glowing down on him from above. When I look at the figure in person it looks pretty good so I took a couple pics to get some feedback and the images look awful. It really looks nothing like this in person. Is it my techniques, my photography, or a mixture of the two?

Though I presonally suggest that if you do multi angle pics, you stack them instead of putting them side by side, as cmon limits width and not height.
