JMD Aviator bust

Got the chance this afternoon to take some quick shots of this demo paintjob:

Aviatorx3.jpg

Why is it a demo? Because it's painted exclusively with these:

Paints--Aviator_Bust.jpg

I hope this will encourage a few of you to give paints like these a shot, even if it's just for groundwork or accessories. I will be breaking out the Vallejo Model Air for the metals but everything else will be painted only using craft paints, with a touch of acrylic medium where needed to add gloss.

Ahh, a brave step. A have a few of these type of craft paints in the same style bottle. The paint didn' look good when it came out, but hat was probably due to age more than anything. This is one of my favourite fantasy busts out there at the moment, so I am excited to see your work on this one. How big is it again? If I remember rightly I couldn't see a size advertised on the webstore where I first saw it.

The face looks more like a photo then a paintjob...!!! You ve captured everything like it is in real life. Some rogue here, a beard there, beautiful, eyes close to reality - simply amazing!

Excellent work so far Einion.

Ta all! Mostly posted this to show off the paint though, not the paintjob per se.

For anyone who doesn't remember or wasn't here back then this has been done before so I can't take any credit for the idea :)

are you planning on doing a full wip, til finished?
Wasn't really planning on it, no. I doubt there's going to be any shortage of overcast days here for diffuse daylight but I might actually finish this off in only one or two more sittings (and I mostly work at night) so the next chance I get to shoot it might be around 98% done or actually finished. I'll see what I can do though.

They do settle (nothing like as bad as Vallejo though IME!) so a good shake is necessary, 'specially if they are a few years old. Mine are of different vintages, the older ones tend to settle worse than the newer ones I bought more recently.

Total height of the bust is around 60mm, making the face about the size of the nail on my middle finger.

Gorgeous! Great work! I still use the craft paints for all my browns. They've got a couple really nice colors (Americana's Light Cinnamon and Terra Cotta) that I can't seem to get with GW or Vallejo and work great for leather.

Hi Einion, yet again I've been thrown by the actual size of a bust. This one would appear to be smaller than I'd assumed :)

I'll be holding off on the artists acrylics for now as the next things on the list are some water based oils for terrain (& possibly a Giant Slug) & then some investigation of alkyds for terrain & possibly mini painting (any thoughts?).

He's coming along very nicely, I'm looking forward to seeing how you deal with the goggle lenses :)

Cheers, B.

Einion proves the point that needs to made more often. It is not the paint (medium) that makes the miniature look good but rather the skill and ability of the painter.

Skill over Medium... :brushlick:

Some quick updates, shirt mostly done:

Lenses done on the goggles:

I had intended doing the remainder of the goggles as polished brass but looking at them now with the lenses completed I think they'll look better as worn paint on the metalwork, maybe a few chips and scrapes showing bright aluminium under khaki or olive drab.
