Is there a GW substitute for VMC Smoke?

I'm working on some copper that I want to look corroded and I've been told its good to have VMC Smoke, but I can't find it. I have many GW paints though so if there is a way to substitute for it then maybe I have the right one. Is there something I can use instead?

There are no more GW inks, they were replaced with washes quite a few years ago. I lament their passing now that I've expended most of my supply.

That being said I use Smoke occasionaly and the GW black wash might not match to well with VMC smoke, you might be able to come closer using a combination of Delvan Mud(brown wash) or Ogryn Flesh(flesh wash) with a bit of Ashurman Blue and black wash mixed in to get that unique smoke color. Another option would be artist inks, chestnut or dark brown ink mixed with a bit of blue and black should give the same basic color.

If you're looking for corroded copper patina, I've used the VMC Verdigris a few times and once you get a handle on how to use it it has that green you see on well weathered copper/brass.

I live in Japan and I'm not with the military so I can't get good shipping rates unless I do it through a friend. But if I do that I'll have to wait like a month and I really wanted to make good headway on this project this month.

Here is the tutorial im following: http://chestofcolors.com/forum/view...sid=9c289afffadb89f38fad9cd6e618ce21&start=10

Im using this to do some Terminators. He recommends Smoke and some other VMC colors like Park Green that I can't find equivalent colors for.

Tamiya Smoke then?

You can tweak the colour of this with a little paint and sometimes get away with it but the safest way of modifying the colour is with the other Tamiya clear colours that share the same chemistry. I presume you're not familiar with them so just to give you a headsup, they dry pretty glossy.

Back to this bit:

There are many ways of painting most things, literally dozens in some cases. Even if you see a kickass painted effect and the modeller is kind enough to list all the paints he used, it's no guarantee that using them will allow you to recreate the effect easily. Particularly for very intricate and/or subtle effects, a lot of it will be down to the techniques used and the skill of the painter.

I managed to find a number of Japanese sites that I can order from and found the colors I want. I also talked to the artist who did that Blight Drone and got some good advice. I realize I may not be able to get the same effect as he did, but I think I'm going to learn a lot from this so I decided to move forward with it. Thank you so much for all of the advice. It was extremely helpful =)

I'm in Japan too (as my nick implies) and I would vote Tamiya Smoke all the way. I really like the stuff. If you're doing a blight drone, Tamiya clear red or clear green may be handy, too. (I used clear red on mine in the oozy bits.)

Incidentally, where are you in Japan? If you're a gamer, come say howdy on Nagoyahammer.com. :) We bicker, but we're friendly :)

Thanks for the advice. I took a look at your Blight Drone and it's a fantastic piece. I nearly bought some clear green on a whim, but I think I'm going to try this without it. The project in doing is for some Terminators just before they take on Nurgle's blessing. If I ever make any progress on them I'll post them up.

I took a look at Nagoyahammer by the way. Sounds awesome! I'm in Nagano, in the countryside. It's like two hours to Nagoya, but I'd love to come out to one of your meets some time.
