Iron Knights Space Marine (out of AoBR box)

Hello CMON!

This is my latest little project. I was looking for a paint scheme that I\'d enjoy for more of just one marine and finally landed with the Iron Knights.

However, some pictures first:

After Chaos Black priming, the armour got layers of boltgun metal (main parts) and adeptus battlegrey (should pad inlays and helmet) until it was nice and even. After that, both got washes of badab black, with great effect in my opinion.

The flamer muzzle received additional chaos black drybrushing and two washes of devlan mud to make the metal look scorched and heated. The flamery body got layers of shining gold, accompanied by washes of leviathan purple and badab black. I was going for a weathered brass or bronze look and am quite pleased with it at the moment.

Purity seal wax is simply red gore with a highlight of blood red, the purity seal itself is scorched brown to graveyard earth to bleached bone and a wash of devlan mud over the chaos black text. I think it gives a nice colour spot on all that gunmetal grey armour.

Eyes are painted with red gore/blood red/blazing orange and a dot of skull white. The helmet got very subtle higlights of adeptus battlegrey, not sure if I should go for brighter highlights...

Overall, I\'m quite pleased with the actual look. I\'m now thinking about mithril silver highlights on the main armour. The metal paint already gives nice contrasts and I like the dull, somewhat weathered look it has at the moment.

So I thought I would ask the people of CMON if I should go for more armour highlights and especially where I should place them. :) I think some edge highlighting might be in order...

Of course, if you have comments and critique on the paintjob as it is now, even just some thoughts, please tell me! :) I still need and want to learn and get better, and that won\'t happen without your help, I guess. ;)

Thanks for reading,
Witzkatz

Postscriptum: Of couse, he needs his chapter markings, too. For those who are not familiar with the Iron Knights, it is basically a cross with some elaborate ends on every part of the cross. I guess I need to freehand that one, but at the moment that scares me a bit. Has anyone tried to make some kind of template out of paper to ease mass painting of freehands like this?

Postpostscriptum: This is my 7th mini I am trying to paint, so it would be kind if you would not judge me by the standards of freeman, giganticdark, nano and all the other great and experienced painters here on CMON. However, as I said, critique is still needed. :D

That is an absolutely brilliant colour scheme! Although, I think that the black on the shoulder pads and armour ribbing needs some more highlights, possibly on the other black parts but i am unsure... Also, I think he needs a little more detail depicted on him, for example; perhaps the skull on the flamer? Mithril highlights would be a good idea on places like his fingers, I think.

I\'m certainly no expert... I have only painted one thing myself! So, I would wait until someone of better experience advises you before acting lol, just my thoughts!

Well done so far though

A very neat, clean, and well painted mini

it is a very good gaming standard atm and i know thats what it is for. But if you want to improve on painting metallics, i would say you need to highlight it and shade it a lot more. I usually start with a basecoat of boltgun shade with chaos black and then i highlight with mithril silver. Then i go on to do glazes of cold or warm colours for example blue or brown to create the mood im looking for.

heres what my metallics look like:

i think if you want really expert advice then i think nano is one of the best painters minis to look at.

hope i\'ve helped

Thanks for your answers! :) I guess a few Mithril Silver highlights would really be in order, I\'m just pondering about where to set them exactly...I may start with simply highlighting the edges of the armour, can\'t go wrong with that. ;)

Dr.C.Strange: I agree on the detail and am thinking right now about painting the skull on the flamer tank a different colour. Maybe red or blue...or brass, too, like the flamer body? Not sure about that.

.sam.: Your metal on that marine looks great! I guess I have to read a bit more about this glazing technique, I\'d like to be able to achieve such effects, too :)
