I would like to know some opinions about a league system at CMoN

Hi folks
i had read the threads about voting and how to vote and so on.
I see it also everyday some guys posting here are newbies get very low rating and are properbly pissed off sometimes.
I had the idea of a league system like e.a.
Newbies
normal people
advanced
profi
god- like

only a idea so I would really want to know your oppinion of that idea.
I think it would solve some problems and got the posting here a little touch of competition and the people the chance to improve thereself to get in higher leagues.
for example 5 minis in a league with votings over a 8 would give the permission in a higher league.
what you think? greetz DELTADOG

I don\'t know, it almost seems too competitive to me. And, for a site that is usually used for feedback and improvement, it seems almost to be a hindrence. Not to mention, for the little bit of competive nature we do have the painter ranking system, that provides a direct peer-to-peer competition that makes users want to post better minis to advance up the ranks.

Good thought, but I\'m not really for it.

Have fun!

I like the idea in principle...but...

This is a wondeful idea in principle, a bit like the handicapping system in golf?
I don\'t think it will work in practice however. My main objection, is the fact that the site is not (IMO) meant to be competitive (apart from the odd organised competition)and you only need a handicapping system in a competitive sport. I know newbies get pissed off, but part of the \'newbie experience\' (in any site) is getting pissed off. They will get over it. If they don\'t - then do we want them to hang around for too long?

Like Finn it sounds nice but I like to be rated with everyone else. I get 5.X most of the time and after seeing what the 8-10 are I am quite satisfied with my 5.X\'s.

Really IMO if you cant take a lower score then dont post. I\'m pretty sure everyone had to start at one time and if they cant realise this then well...

A handicapping System

\"a bit like the handicapping system in golf?\"

Now, I\'d never think of that as a handicapping system. A handicapping system would be more like taking the average of all our minis and putting that next to the average of each individual mini so that you can see which minis are at the higher ranges and which are at the lower ranges. I can\'t really see any use in that, unless you had a competition based on our handicaps. But, if that happened, the best mini wouldn\'t win, just the best mini to someones ability. It would be more like an amateur system versus the profesional systems that don\'t use handicaps.

Have fun!

I think your are right.

it was only a idea so more though like a handicap system to make it easier for newbies or very young people (like the youngbloods section on golden demon)
but the \"all one family\" intention of this page is better but sometimes harder for some people.
PS: I`m fine with my ratings so it should not be a reclamation of me about my scores and after 13 years of practice in this hobby I´m really no feel like a newbie !!

......

personally I see CMON as more a feedback and comments place where everyone is in one big community and there\'s no differentiation between the actual age of members.......

altho the ratings are fun.... that\'s what they are ...... something fun for ppl to surf around and do rather than just browse endless gallaries...

and at the lowest level its a simple way to see how you are rated with everyone, newbies, advanced and pros. I mean... I\'d rather be compared with the best in the world and get a 3 .....rather than be in a systemized league and get an 8..... it helps me to roughly gauge where I stand and lets me know how much more I need to improve to get there....

But it doesnt mean I am going to let low marks cast a cloud over my day.....cos after being on CMON awhile I jus decided to take the polls casually..... cos I am not gonna let some poll determine how I view myself and my work...... what I really value are comments like....

I like this cos.....
or
I dont really like this cos.....

well reasoned and supported evalutions.... helpful tips and comments and so forth... these, I feel, are far more valuable to everyone.... it helps you see where you made ur mistake and helps you to get a lot better at what you do.

So no, I wont reccomend having a league system cos its too competitive and would scare away ppl who like this hobby and jus wanna find a few friends who can critique their work.

Perhaps if there is a desire for more competition.... it should be done in the context of a contest.... and there are numerous contests around..... including the upcoming CMON one... so I say, jus participate in the contests, take the outcome and scores as they come and see if its justified.... if not, then what do you lose? I believe if you have submitted a truly superior work..... the work should speak for itself.....

No Thanks

Most of my reasons for disliking the idea of a league have been posted more eloquently by others previously, but just wanted to let my \"vote\" be known.

A bit off topic, but how do you quote people from a thread on a new post?

1) Highlight the text you want to quote.Press Control & C
2) in POST REPLY click on the Quote icon, then press Control & V.
Voila: there\'s your quote.

About this topic.. No I\'m against leagues/handicaps, that smacks of elitism to me.
This site is all about the equality of the hobby and the development of each others skills. Lets keep it like that.

Ditto on that sentiment
Everyone wants a high rating. Even me. But I dont want to be rated number 1 of the \"normal people\" any more than I want to be last of the godlike.
And who will be responsible for handicapping me? ???
No... Bad idea and bad kharma :|~
(IMOHP of course... :) )

There\'s an even easier way...

Dragonsreach is absolutely spot on, but there is an even easier way. Just click on the \'quote\' button that is at the top of every post and edit out anything you don\'t want between the \'quote\' markers. (they are in square brackets, but if I actually use square brackets, this will appear as a \'quote\')
If you want to quote the whole post, no editing is needed.

You will actually have to do it to see what I mean:flip:

Thanks a lot for the quoting help, I feel like an idiot now. I saw the quote button on the main page but I skipped right over it on the post reply page.

Thanks for everything,
Have fun!

Well, as one of those beginner painters, I must say it is a great goal, to try and paint a 6.0. Two of my submissions from the last batch I posted are scoring above a 6.0 and I\'m extremely happy with it. This is really not a competition. I do think CMoN is a great place where you can get a pretty realistic measure of how well you have painted a miniature.

I know many people are around a 7.0, and try to beat that 8.0 mark, and there are some who strive for the 9\'s and 10\'s.

Leages are not needed, they are already in place. We just have to calmly accept where we are, regardless of whether it\'s beginner or pro, and try to improve on it.

There might be management problems..

I can see the appeal of a league system but I do feel that it would not be in the (nominally) non-competitive spirit of the site.
Besides, they would have to invent a, \'dick-fingered, colour blind, aesthetically challenged neanderthal\' category if I ever get round to posting one of my own minis.:bouncy:

Thank you for asking...

Deltadog...Thank you for posing the question! I know you have had pretty negative feedback in terms of your idea but that doesn\'t mean that you haven\'t done CMON a favour by asking the question in the first place.

It was certainly a very valid question and I could not have answered it until I had seen the responses to your post.

Great question, thanks for stimulating some thought!!:bouncy:

the ever nice Mr Finn ...

Finn is right. It was a good suggestion, Deltadog. It shows that you care about CMON and like everyone else, wishes for better advances in this community.

I also agree with everyone else here. It\'s a fabulous idea but a tab bit competitive and geared towards a \"dog\" eat \"dog\" community instead of sharing information and airing our views.

However, I will wish for a change in the ranking system. The mid to high range is too congested and the lower range hardly used.

Now, that\'s my 2 cents worth and seriously, 2 cents nowadays can\'t buy you anything so don\'t mind it.

Yeah, but we have to keep it around in case people start doing dumb things like posting tons of flash-covered plastic minis painted with primer and a Testor\'s brush. That deserves a 2, not a 5. Any of my old, old work, until it\'s repainted, would get a 4, it\'s not up to modern tabletop standards even. But I don\'t post it, because I doubt anyone would want to see it.
