I\'m rather confused

Whilst making my daily trip to the Top Last 7 Days I was rather stunned to see this mini sitting on a 9.5 with 202 votes from 700 and no comments whatsoever. It strikes me as an 8 or so at most, and I just thought it was rather dubious, especially when you look at this tasty effort which is phenomonal and actually has received less votes.

Is it just my naturally suspicious nature kicking in? Is the admittedly nice base making people vote like crazy? Am I wrong, and this is actually one of the best minis on CMON? Or is there something fishy going on?

Not that it matters that much in the grand scheme of things, just doesn’t make much sense to me.

I have to agree with u. forgot about the other fellbeast - could be some other forums it\'s plugged on thats got it\'s vote count up, but I wouldn\'t put it at 9,5 from those photos alone.

to be really suspicious, there\'s 3 in the top 10 last 7 by the same painter, one of which just does not seem quality stuff at all.

oh well!

such is life

Well, as of my posting, things are equalizing, with only a .1 difference between the minis. Yes I think that a base can make a big difference. I have the same mini posted here, one with a crappy base and the same exact mini on a better base and the score is roughly a half a point better on the better base.

The former not only has a better base, but a better photo, while the latter is just dark enough to hide the really cool parts of the paint job.

I just see it as a matter of taste. One is more fantasy-art oriented, but the other does have a bit of a shabby sword. The quality is good in both, though I don\'t think either is going into my favorites list.

Have to agree Jambott. That one is ropey in the extreme (for a mini scoring 9.5...). Dunno how it\'s scoring that highly \'cos you can\'t even see the paint job from the dodgy pics that have been put up.

Lots of fans/mates I reckon...:D

Now if I wasn\'t such a Billy-No-Mates...:D

209 votes when it was submitted on August 4 huh? That\'s pretty impressive! Wow...if I could do marketing something like that for the theatre company I work with, we\'d be on Broadway!

Holger\'s been in this community a long time and I certainly don\'t think he\'d do anything dastardly. I don\'t know him personally but he seems a rather standup guy.

Must be something else going on.

Pretty much...not that I\'m casting aspersions on him or anything. It\'s just a very impressive showing for a few days, which could be roots in different communities or something.

If I would of seen Holgar\'s mini prior to this thread I would of gave it an 8 to 8.5. I just don\'t think it has that wow factor to warrent a score of 9+. Is it good? Yes. But I don\'t think it is 9.4 good.

I also keep the scores hidden so I am not influenced bywhat the average score is.

Holger is a pretty known name! If he\'s announced his work on other forums I guess a lot of people who don\'t normally come here will go and vote. It\'s also likely that they come here only to vote on Holger\'s stuff and wouldn\'t take the time to compare it to other minis on here.

I agree with Ritual. I believe Holger is probably involved in other non-english speaking sites, its no stretch to think if he had linked his work there he\'d get a ton of votes.

I do personally like Awchoos version better, but it makes me no nevermind on who gets what or how many votes.

I also think there are many many voters who limit what they view here to only \"8 or 9s and above\", which in my opinion, they are doing themselves a huge disservice. BUT, those folks are entitled to use the site as they see fit...It is frustrating though that those pieces get 100\'s of votes in a short period of time, but I have maybe 2 in my entire gallery that have even gotten 100 votes, EVER!!

@ supervike Well I just went through your gallery and voted on the odd mini that I had missed and I got your orc boss its 100th vote. So now you have another one at 100+ votes. :D

I know Holger used to post links to his minis on the German Confrontation forum, he also has his own website with constant updates of his minis along with links to C\'mon. I agree with the others, Holger just knows how to advertise his stuff. :D

Borg posted this response over on the other variation of this thread in General Discussion. I thought it was so well worded and so close to describing how I feel about this whole thing, that I\'d just go ahead and post it here:

Orignally posted by Borg:

Borg on CMON voting:

Since this topic has come up a couple of times recently, let me put in my 2 cents.

Popular people get more votes. Yes, people that link their work from forums and from websites will get more votes. Just like any other product in the World, you are competing against almost 60,000 images for attention, anything that you do to make your work stand out will receive more attention.

Popular miniatures or miniature lines will get more votes. People need to identify with what they are voting on most of the time, so if you are painting whats hot at the moment, ie, GW, Rackham, WM etc, most likely you will get more attention.

Popular techniques will get more votes. If you paint in a style that is currently popular, ie, NMM, rusty metal, freehand, you will get more votes.

There are many other reasons. I have said it before, CMON is what it is - Cool Mini Or Not. What is a cool mini to one might not be to another. You might like the paintjob, the sculpt, the conversion or even the painter, that is all up to you.

If someone gets a lot of votes, great! So a lot of people like something that you don\'t. Well, you might have different taste. If we all like exactly the same thing, then we will all be wearing the same clothes, driving the same car and marrying the same girl Try to be happy for somebody who is getting the appreciation and not be so worried about fowlplay.

To be honest, there are tens of thousands of people on this site, if everyone would just vote, then there is no amount of sniping or inflating that anyone can do anyways... just a thought.

Two cents

Y\'know it\'s stuff like this that prevents me from posting any of my GD winning LOTR pieces here. The 200+ votes fanboyism just isn\'t there for me, so I have no hope of achieving anything like some of the figs that get get these scores. I gotta admit I don\'t have the thick skin to put up with it anymore either.
Besides my account is damned near maxed out anyways.:p

BUT! In Holger\'s defense he has been an active of part of the online miniature figure community for quite some time and is highly respected in many circles./ I have no doubt that is reflected by these unusually high scores and vote counts.

Still, I wish some of my figs could get 200+ votes in a week.:wow:

200 votes in a week! I\'m just upset I can\'t compete with either of these cats. Both are awesome paint jobs in their own right for very different reasons.
