How far are you willing to go for good Star Wars miniatures?

I have been trying to clean up and convert some of the WOTC Star Wars miniatures and there’re divining insane. First off, I don’t want get into the bad sculpts and the immense variability in quality, but the bendy plastic makes removing the flash almost impossible, and what you can do is time prohibitive. Small defects that can be normally corrected easily are also almost impossible. You cannot strip them effectively, without damaging the plastic. I have not even bothered with GS conversions, because with the “flexibility” of the base material, why take the effort and make a fragile gaming piece.

So, I have decided to literally cast my own out of resin, just to be able to clean, convert, and give them a decent paint job. Has anyone else done this? I’m just curious, I’m not interested in selling them, but I really just want some good miniatures for my Traveller and Star Wars games.

Get Seb Archer to sculpt them for you, you may need a boat load of cash, but the result would be ace!

Holy crap that is cool! Is pro-create anything like GS? I though it was sculpted with GS until I read the post.

I\'d definitely second the shout on the Hasslefree ones as they\'re very cool and nicely done.

I\'ve done a bit of work with some of the WOTC and I agree 100% about how hard they are to clean, especially when compared to something like Heroclix which seemed to clean a lot easier.

Other options for SW figs include the Darth Maul from Paizo - http://paizo.com/store/paizoExclusives/v5748btpy80on&source=search or you could try and source some of the original metal minis from West End Games for the RPG on eBay (they appear some times, but can get expensive).

Finally you might be able to pick up some of the SW Monopoly sets cheap as they have some really nice pewter minis in them.

Hope that helps

The WotC minis are made out of vinyl so that is why they don\'t cut or even bend when malformed as they already have memory to them as they were molded and bent while still hot.

The only way to trim them is with a very sharp scalpel. The sculpts nothing can help. :(

Good luck with your moldings/castings.

If it so frustrating that, Star Wars is one of the best IP around, and there are so many great characters, not just from the movies but the comics, and books that are all wasted on the cruddy plastic, or vinyl, and painted by trained monkeys. I don’t know what George is thinking about, if one of his kids got a regular pack and not a promo pack, I’m sure it would be shock to him.
