How do you make fog?

...or mist, or smoke?

I have a mini of a ninja leaping in the air on a base that has these sort of... bubbles that the manufacturer says are supposed to be fog. But to me they look like freakish alien growths spurting up from the ground and by no means do I want to just paint them as is.

What do you all use to create the illusion of fog in your minis? Cotton? Anyone use anything else?

I\'m tossing ideas out because can\'t really tell very well what will work for your mini.

One thing I saw in a museum was for dust. They\'d taken a piece of plexiglass and carefully painted a dust splatter onto it. That might work, using white and some gray spray. Glue the mini on top.

Just did a quick google, and you could heat it up in the oven to about 350°F. Get some glass marbles and different sizes of such to make a cloud shape for it to melt on. Then pop it in the oven. Then do it again when you screw the first one up.

LOL! Isn\'t that the truth :)
I\'m not totally sure I understand what it would look like - kind of glassy or cloudy looking bubbles? What did you google so I can repeat your search?

I used cotton wool as tear gas on \"Riot Girl\". I\'m not sure if that would work on your guy though.

She looks awesome!! I love the tie dye shirt especially :D

I found a picture of the model, here is the official paint job (not mine). What\'s painted as a rock here doesn\'t really show up the funky bubbles, I almost wonder if the painter cut them off.

The search was for \"plexiglass forming\". Nothing really technical came up, but I got the impression that it could be done (which is where that 350 number from). I just didn\'t continue searching enough to find something very detailed.

As for the shape, yes, I would be going for a bubbly texture, but random enough that you couldn\'t pick out exactly what it was. I figured that marbles would be a good way to start. One of things it said was to not let the plastic actually turn to a liquid, as it would then cloud up... which might be useful anyway.

I suppose the other way to do it would be to heat the plexiglass up enough to manipulate it by pushing with a rounded stick of some sort. It would give more control over the shape.

Ok so here is my take on Takanosuke. I decided against the plexiglass because - well, because it just intimidated me too much, and I doubt I have the skill to pull it off well.

I\'m not satisfied with the cotton batting because the strands are so thick, they just don\'t work well and are incredibly distracting.

Anyone know of a finer-stranded stuffing?

Cotton wool looks ok to me.

If you really want to make a realistic looking mist you could sell all your worldly possessions and try to buy some Aerogels \"solid smoke\"

I believe its the lightest solid known to man, and really quite amazing.
Doesn\'t really help though..... sorry.

You can\'t carve aerogels, plus they are extremely brittle. So besides the insane cost I don\'t even think you could make them work.

Maybe soaking the cotton in some glue/water mix to make it denser and less stringy would work. You might end up with a soppy mess instead.
