How do they do it? (GW and reds)

So you seem to have three basic options with reds:

(1)Start with a dark red, and work up to blood red and stop.
(2) Continue into oranges and yellows.
(3) Continue into pinks and finally whites.

But how do they do THIS?

It doesn\'t look like he\'s using an orange or pink, but he\'s clearly going lighter than blood red.

Looks to me like they lightened the red with one of the light/yellowish brown tones. Red being in color theory a combination of magenta and yellow and browms being varying amounts of red and yellow, you can use one of those componenets to bring the color lighter and still have it feel right with the underlying color:cool:

They did go into the oranges and yellows for the finall Highlights. To build it up to the finial highlights though they were slowly mixing organge and then yellow into the crimson. You will want to stay away from white, unless you want a pick look.

Yeah, it\'s orange. I was going to post a screenshot of Photoshop to prove this, but that damn photobucket account is taking forever to be activated.

For warm, deep red I start out with dark, reddish brown (preferrably Vallejo Model Color\'s Cadmium Maroon) and then start highlighting with normal red. Or otherwise I add a bit light-yellow (Vallejo Ice Yellow) for the highlights.

But whatever you do, don\'t mix in pure white. Pink highlights are so unrealistic...

Yep theres definitely a yellow in that final highlight. It almost looks light sourced.
No matter what I do I always go back to lowlighting reds.Starting darker and working up to pure red.It cuts out all the hassle.I think a red like this looks much more realistic than a pink or orange highlight.
Example Archaon\'s cloak

looks like they used a brown basecoat, maybe also glazed back the highlights with red to make them look like there is no orange, but what do I know?

Ifs a slightly older figure from when the evey metal team used slightly different highlight combos to what they do now....

I would say that they may have used something like the old blood angel orange for highlights over red gore, blood red. Final highlights would have had either firey orange or yellow added. Then the robes would have been glazed with red ink - maybe even a little purple ink.

I\'ve never had a problem with photobucket, quite happy with it :) but I registered with imageshack as well :D

back to topic: as Bob Ross always said you need a dark color to show off a light color, option 2, he/she has gone into yellows but probably applied a red glaze to tie it all together & make it more of a subtle transition

I found that red looks really good highlighted with Snakebite Leather.
That is what I used on the Warmaster scale banner in the bolt thrower
Here
If you look real close, I also use it in the gems.
