Yes, it goes out in a spherical shape, diminishing as it goes.

edit - I really like the fig with the telescope. What\'s his name and manufacturer?

My Start I think it is getting better thanks to you all. I painted in the shadows think that is my favorite thus far.
Whats next Shawn???
BTW
The figure is a GW dwarf one of the cannon crew that I put a mask on to switch him up.

looking very nice - the shdows are great!

it looks like you have a dark spot under the cannon blast that needs to be much lighter (possibly the brightest spot).

I am glad you think it is getting better and,
:) You are very observent... that is the shadow of the cannon barrel caused by the lights I used for the photo. when I take the real photo I will make sure that is counter balanced. Thank you for the heads up I would not have spotted it.

Zoinks! This is a big \'mini\'. Not impossible but there is alot there so be patient.

First, it looks real good. You are well on your way. What I would say at this point is to paint the back side of the fig\'s black. Sorry to have you go over your nice paintjob. Mabey a DARK wash of black. There needs to be more contrast between front (lit) and back (unlit). The unlit sides of all the parts of the cannon need to be darker.

Now, this is going to sound contradictory to what I have said earlier in the thread. The rings around the barrell, the edges of the gears on the gunmount, the pillow block\'s that the gear connect\'s to - Think of how you figure where to put the \'gleam\' on a gem. Using pure white put the same thing on these parts. The \'gleam on the hoop\'s around the barrell wont be points but an uneven line that goes around the entire hoop.

The grass-dirt under the muzzle flash needs to be alot lighter and have a greener green. Since the muzzle flash leans to the yellow make the grass lime yellow with a touch of white and drybrush that in a circle on the ground that will be VERY (light pastel lime green) light under the flash and diminish at about the axle of the wheels. BLEND this. Dont just have it end sharply.

The muzzle flash itself - Heavily drybrush the MIDDLE 2/3 leving a bit of white in the crevices. Again, blend this but have the transition to white happen quicker.

The front 1/2 of the barrell. Drybrush heavily with the same color/tone you used on the lit side of the wheels. Blend it to darker as it gets back to the gears.

The shadows behind the fig\'s and cannon, go totally black, same with the foliage in the trees. Have the back edge of the diorama be totally black in a semicircle with the front of the cannon being the apex of the curve.

I know this probably seems like alot but doing it over the web is a bit difficult. But DONT LOSE HEART. it\'s comming along just fine.

A few tighter shots of the cannon would help and take 1 mini and shoot it, not changing the elevation, from front, side, back. All this after you have done the above suggestions. Wide shot\'s too.

Till next time!
Seeeeee yaaaaaaa

WOW Tab, that is amazing! Maybe I\'ll have to try something like that sometime... This place is so inspiring lol...

Anyways I would love some tips on how to improve my OSL, so far this is my best piece (second attempt, first is the only one in my gallery if you care to look):

The mini is now finished, and I had entered him in a local competition, didnt win though, but alot of the staff/judges liked the OSL. :D

Wow, this is an awesome thread. Thanks so much for doing this publically so we can all learn.

Shawn is a great teacher but it\'s obvious that TAB is a talented student too.

I\'m dying to try some OSL with my Elf Sorceress by Reaper, but I have too many commissions to do right now, I can\'t focus on my own stuff! Not really a bad thing, actually...

Shawn, how late do you allow your students to arrive? I\'ll be here in about a month I think. ;)

I tried this technique for the first time this year - and was really pleased with how effective it looks.

This just undercoated black with 3/4 grades of green.

TAB i love yuor cannon, especially the shadows - they lend a huge amount of realism IMO. nice work.

@mcclimbin - You can post now or whenever you wish. When I see the thread on the top of the pile I take a look, whenever. Look forward to seeing what you get.

@mcclimbin - At this point, your mini dosent need alot to get the OSL to really shine.

One thing about OSL that is a bit of a trick is to understand tone. Some of the really mind blowing OSL (I\'m thinking of Eric\'s one with the blue fire) are done in pitch black. I have done it and it\'s a very dramatic effect. BUT pitch balck isnt necessarily the only way. There are shades/tone\'s/values of black. I can take a flashlight-torch that\'s a million candle power and turn it on at high noon outside. It IS pumping out alot of light. Because the ambient light is so bright you will get almost NO effect from the flashlight. If you were to aim it at something and take a picture every 30 minuets or so and look at them in sequence you would notice that FAR before total darkness the effect of the light would be visable. Look on a rainy or foggy day. You can see just fine BUT the car headlight\'s show up more and definately glow. That\'s because, while not black, the ambient light has been reduced to the point where the headlamps are putting out more light.

Now, your mini. It appears you have a bright flashlight in noon day sun. You can simply \'push the light\' a little further in the day. Dosent have to be night.

This mini I did this effect on.

http://www.coolminiornot.com/114300

I simply restricted the TONE of my pallete to dull and darker colors than the eye\'s, thus the eyes are now the brightest part of the mini and give the illusion of being lit.

Back to you. Take your mini and do some darkening of the whole mini EXCEPT the actual lightsource and some of the cast light on the fig. Washes would be a simple way to do this and in a matter of a few minuets your mini could glow much more. If you have read much of what I have written in this thread you will hear me, over and over, saying that the ONLY place on the fig where there should be pure white is the actual lightsource and MABEY small dot\'s like the \'gleam\' put on gems.

Try that and post some more WIP\'s.

Dont ask me how, but it just re-appeared!!!! Yippieeee!!!!:Dlol

Hi Tracy. Glad you are still willing to hang in there. It\'s comming along swimmingly.

Alot of this stuff I\'m used to DOING and not used to TELLING so please forgive me if there is a bit of back and forth and redoing. I am doing this from different computers and the monitors are definately different.

The total black in the shadows really helped. With the edges blended, right under the muzzle flash, in a circle about as wide as the flash is long, drybrush in some much lighter green.

I\'m not sure how to explain this.........VERY lightly, so as to pick up just the highpoints, but gone over enough so that the highlights are really solid, drybrush the front of the fig\'s with the same yellow ocher used at the 11oclock position of the wheel.

Keeping a straight line with blurred edged, put a black shadow behind the wheels of the gun and have the whole shadow of the gun strech back further.
