OK I have a wip and a start from previous work and now will continue with aid please

I had the idea to have the fire glow on the crew in there respective places....possible? the engineer 2 pistol guy will have the flame in his mouth also for lighting the cannon.

Will it be the most help if I set up the display base as soon as I can so the placement of the osl is known for sure...the places I have them at now is where but I am not positive...
I know that i have a lot of work to do but it is my start

Thank you in advance for any help you can give this project

the cannon is more beautiful than my girlfriend lol I LOVE the flames!! um this might be a bad idea, but id suggest taking a small flash light and shining it back from the tip of the cannon and taking a picture of it. Look at my bad ascii drawing for clarification (cannon) _/o====D >o=====(flashlight)
Like that that way it looks like the flames are comming back into the mouth

Well I\'ll just take a seat up the front. Dont have a mini yet but that will take only a few moments. (Gotta build one)

Like the cannon Tab I thought you might try that big mini with the flames you painted last. That would look great with OSL (Looked great with out it but the mind boggles) Anyway I\'ll shut up now so class can start.

@TAB - GORGEOUS start. The shell comming out of the fire is too cool..........OK, this will go in steps, suggestion - WIP, suggestion - WIP etc...

If I understand what you said, one of the crew will have fire in his mouth. The ONLY places at this moment where there will be pure white is the entire flame comming out of the gun, do the shell also, and whatever flame is in the fellow\'s mouth (cool idea).

It appeares you have used alot of metallic paint on this. Done very well. For doing OSL, metallic\'s dont work so, sorry, but do a dull, mid dark NMM on what is now metallic.

From the pic it appeares that the mini\'s are primed in light grey. Give them a wash of blue black all over.

Towards the beginning of the article I talk about where the light should end up and how to calculate that. The idea of a paint grenade going off at the SOURCE OF THE LIGHT is a pretty easy way to get things close. Simply imagine a \'paint bomb\' going off from where you have the muzzle flash. With the mini\'s set where you want them, imagine where the paint from that explosion would hit each thing....eg. the front of the hand and not the back, the side of a gun and not the side facing away, the tip of the nose and not the sides. Think of each part of each mini in relation to where the paint from the \'bomb\' would end up, or not end up. I\'ll use a naughty word here. Drybrush! Now, using a rust color with a touch of yellow and white drybrush the side of each item facing the flame. Drybrushing is very effective in catching all the little surfaces.

Try that and either ask more questions or post a WIP. Dont be shy to ask alot of questions.

Something to know. Right now my parents are going down hill fast and I have been having a real hard time of it. If I dont respond right away that\'s probably why and I will get back. This OSL project is good medicine and I wont bail out on it but I need to pace myself.:(

I am REALLY looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!!

Now GET OUT THERE AND MAKE ME PROUD!!!lol

TAB, that looks awesome, but I do have one comment on your placement.... you should move the man at the telescope back behind the cannon. He would not last long in that position...if the shock wave didn\'t knock him over, he would at least not have any hearing intact.

You never want to stand that close to the business end of a firing cannon.... :D

the cannon looks awesome...and I\'m curious about what Shawn said re: not being able to do OSL with metallics...might have to experiment with that.... I\'m thinking a Tamiya glaze maybe....

Some amount of a lit effect could be acheaved but not as much as with a painted effect, also, metallics are a \'real\' thing as opposed to OSL which is a painted illusion. The two would look odd together.

Thanx for the thoughts Grumb.............

(in homer voice) hmmm, metallics.....
I might actually have to try osl now, I don\'t take \"can\'t\" well, and even though it was tactfully said it still sounds too close to \"can\'t\" and I just got some new metallic colors.:D

Just went through this, I\'m with you in thoughts, hopes, and prayers that there will be recovery and healing for as many of you as possible.

Thank you guys

Hi Shawn I shall try my best!
I am thrilled you all like the cannon :D
Recoil889 you may want to keep the significant other away from this thread though lol But i am touched.

I was going to do transparent paint by Vallejo It is all I known because I had done it before on the Boyz, but I am here to learn darn it and frankly I fully understand the point of the difference in mediums being important as well as contrary. On a second note I am not personally really thrilled with the metallics I feel they are dull and lack pop so it is a good thing to change.
I may need hints on the colors to use if I miss the mark But I promise I will try to do us proud.
Grumb... agreed I need to move that mini maybe I will put some shells there that can catch some light that is why I had him there but any one like you with logic will say dead man huh ? Makes sense.

Shawn can I steal you bent plant idea?? Got to get the base going and that is one of my favorite things and will remind me not to blow the crew away...

I am so very honored you are taking the time in such a grief and stress ridden space in your life and do not expect or wish you to forgo any of your family or self needs.
My mom is 81 and both fathers has long since passed as well as two sisters. I have to deal with many of the factors and will in future be dealing with them...I wish there was an instructor for that life lesson but I fear there is not.
I pledge to you total patience and understanding if you need to alleviate this and can in the future redo at your will. I will fly to work as fast as able and listen so I do not waste your time.

Psst Hi Wendy Darn good to see you popping up :flip:

Sorry about your parents...

One thing..

I posted this a while back. I believe OSL can be done on metals. The reason being in real life, imagine looking at the metal on your car...or even better, chrome rims on the car. Now imagine you were flashing a flash light at the metal. There would be the strong bright point where the beam hits the metal and reflects, and areas around it as well.

Now, imagine someone else walking by the car and looking at it. They would see the metal a bit differently due to different angle, but they would still see the same bright spot you are creating from the flashlight.

What does this show? Well, unlike NMM, which doesn\'t have true reflection (since it\'s \'fake\'...it\'s not really reflecting the light in the room, metallics will, however, in real life, this is what happens all the time. I think the way to paint it is, just like NMM with OSL, choose the angle you want the primary light source to hit. This would simulate you being in one spot and staring at the metal object which is not moving at that instant. The remaining lights in the room, etc will reflect of the rest of the metal parts...I hope it makes sense.

Anyways...sorry for the Rant :) I need to try this of course, and see how it turns out.

I\'m not bothered by your \'rant\'. It\'s an interesting point. I think you sort of make my point in your response - the metallic surface is an \'active\' reflector. It WILL reflect what is around it and that includes the real light sources. You would have to have the real light source INSIDE of the part of the mini where the light is \'supposed\' to come from. Elsewise what you will end up with is two light sources - the one that is implied by the OSL painting and the actual, real lightsource from whatever is lighting the mini.

I think some light effect is possible with metallics included but they would simply conflict and more importantly diminish what is possible going strictly from paint effects alone. OSL is rather a bit of sleight of hand and metallics simply detract from the trick.

Metallics can be very beautful. I\'m DEFINATELY not opposed to them. I, right now am going to do a Warmachine Steamjack in ALL metallics.

NOW SHUT UP AND GET TO PAINTING!!!!!!!!!!!lol

I think I missed something

Was there a class? The article you are referring to, is that the one you did a year ago?
Can I sign up? What are the prereqs?

Here is a little fella I have been working on. Unfortunately, I too have done him in metallics. I would appreciate any suggestions on him. I know it won\'t be a good as doing it in a NMM fashion, but I am will to accept that if you are will to teach...

Many thanks again, Shawn!

*cries at Shawn for yelling*

I can\'t \'attend\' this class.

I\'ve reached 140 hours for my paris GD entry and still have 100+ hours to do in the next month including 8 banner sides :p (4 banners) in all freehand...

I want to attend since as you can see in my gallery, I have tried OSL with mixed results :p hehe

but I can\'t right now :(

@vincegammer - I\'m giving tips on how to do OSL and all are welcome. If you want to take part, read the OSL article, post some questions and/or WIP\'s and I will TRY to help.

@jabberwokey - For now I wont deal with the bot (cute bot, reminds me of the little bot\'s in Batteries Not Included). Give the candle\'s a good wash of - blending from bottom to top - raw umbre up to yellow ochre. Paint the flames of the candles pure white (I would suggest having the other two candles on the floor be out in which case paint them a medium shade of grey. Three lightsources can get very busy and the lights would cancel eachother out). Paint the top third of the flame a bright yellow and the top third of the yellow part paint orange, of course blending them to each other. On the SHADOW side of the books put a moderately dark wash of blue-black. Projecting FROM the light source across the edges of the books, figure where the shadow of the books should be. The article has pictures and such of how to do this part. Wash this area ALMOST 100%black. Do the same under the robot. Project where the shadow will be and do a wash of black-brown and have it be about 75% darker. Feather the edges of the shadows JUST A BIT. Do that and post some WIP\'s and questions.

@starfyre - you are much further along than you seem to realise. I looked at your gallery and you definately have the general idea of OSL. You just need some \'tuning up\'. I especially thought the Pit Fiend was well on it\'s way to being \'lit\'. What I would suggest on him is to give the dark side a wash of brownish black. You just want to dull it and darken it by say 40%. Dont just paint it black. What you have there is fine, just needs to be darkened. Feather the border between light and dark. Paint the flame in his hand pure white. This is the ONLY place on the mini where there will be pure white. Drybrush the flames lightly with a white/lime green mix. Keep it very light in tone. Do that and post a WIP and questions.

This is the very the start of the NMM

Dwarfs-WIP-2-nmmcannon-1.jpg

I am working at it
Shawn is it dark enough?
I am trying for a Bronze cannon with signs of being fired right?

@TAB - Perfect starting tone. Now paint the muzzle flash and the shell protruding from it white. Figure where the light will fall on the cannon and drybrush and or simply paint those areas with rust orange. Since what you are doing has alot of pieces it might be good to start with the cannon, get it lit and then move on to the fig\'s. By then, hopefully, it should be clear how it\'s done and what needs to happen. Keep them WIP\'s comming.
