Hello, this is Stefen (Tracy\'s son). I am taking a course called career and life planning, and one of the assignments is to find someone that has my dream job and ask them some simple questions.

My dream job is to be a marine biologist, but sadly I don\'t know one personally, so I figured there had to be at least one on this cite. Here are the questions.

1. What are the services, products, or functions of the organization?

2. What are the projections for future development or new directions?

3. What is a typical day like?

4. What is your work environment like?

5. What training would you recommend for someone who wanted to enter the field?

6. What types of people survive and do well in this field?

and finally,

7. Is there anything else about this field that would be helpful for me to know?

Thank you for your help!
Stefen

I\'m a research marine biologist, but there are other types, your marine park wardens and the like.

1. What are the services, products, or functions of the organization?

Being at a university our 2 primary functions are 1) teaching students at BSc, MSc and PhD level. 2) Doing research (which involves writing grant applications to get money to do the research, doing the research and then writing it up in journal papers and books).

2. What are the projections for future development or new directions?

Hmmmm, thats tricky, because we could do anything and go in any direction, by definition research has an element of uncertainty in it. However, probably the biggest thing for the future will be climatic change and sustainable use of marine ecosystems, overfishing is a HUGE problem.

3. What is a typical day like?

For me I spend most of my time in front of a computer writing, but other activities include teaching, practicals, residential field courses, going in the field to do research, trips to conferences, supervising students, coming up with ideas for new things to look at, working in the lab (there is also a lot of form filling and beaurocracy, but I try to forget that).

4. What is your work environment like?

I have my own office in an ugly concrete monstrosity set in parkland next to a lake, other places I\'ve been have included being in an old sandstone building 5m from a sandy beach and an open plan office in the middle of a large city, during filed work it can be a boat, it varies.

5. What training would you recommend for someone who wanted to enter the field?

Probably a degree. Enthusiasm is important, its a popular field with few jobs. The most important thing is experience, offer to work for free in your holidays or spare time in a lab or reserve.

6. What types of people survive and do well in this field?

Ones that don\'t mind getting wet or muddy! Dedicated people, its something you do because you enjoy it, not for the money (there isn\'t any).

and finally,

7. Is there anything else about this field that would be helpful for me to know?

Its a big area, people think whales and dolphins (and maybe fish) when you say marine biologist, but I don\'t know anything about those. I look at slimy algae and worms in mud, do some research about the different types of things out there, working as a warden on the Great Barrier Reef would be very different to what I do.

Hope this helps, if you need any clarification or have other questions let me know. :)

We have a guy up here that\'s on the radio every so often that goes my the name \"The Lake Detective\" (Steve McComas) owner of Blue Water Science that may be something to listen to. Google and a couple of interviews and what not\'s come up. maybe someone that could give you some more information. Just a thought.

Hey Stef, don\'t you have a Sea World near you? :D
You could go ask someone there to get a different perspective from Trevor

I\'d have thought in Florida you\'d be bumping into MB\'s all up and down the beach lol
(sorry I just got this funny picture in my head now I said that lol )

Know what? That painting in the nude does not qualify or that he paints in the nude?

Either is slightly disturbing.
