have been painting for just over a year and am ok now. having read the HH books i want to make a pre-heresy luna wolves army which is accurate to the books but will obviously need a lot of conversion work.

i bought some green stuff & sculpting tool but lets just say my first attempt was not great!

have read the GW website hints and tips but wondered if anyone had some secret tips on sculpting? thanks for any help!

do it in stages
keep the tool moist (vaseline is better than water)

and don\'t be afraid to put pictures up of each stage and listen to critisism as their are some bloody talented guys that hang around here.

Yep. Layers is the key. There are a few nice sculpting articles on here, in the article section.

When sculpting power armor, I find it helpful to use a file after it hardens to make sure the armor is really smooth. You can use more blue putty in this mix to make it easier to file.

if i use vaseline on the tool/GS but work in layers i have to clean the GS before adding more dont i?

if so, whats best to clean the GS with?

Personally I dont like using vaseline on green stuff. The only way to really clean it off is a paper towel, or use a toothbrush with soap and water, which you could risk damaging the model. And yes, green stuff wont stick well to it unless you clean it.

That\'s why I like to use spit. :) Honestly, I do. If you dont want to lick your tools, a cup of water with a few drops of soap mixed in will do the trick, just dip your tools in that.

you can clean the gs with rubbing alcohol. i wouldn\'t bother. i use spit for my tools (it\'s a plumbing putty so is non toxic) and forehead/nose grease on my fingers (it sounds silly but is a great technique used by a load of pros)

the main things as mentioned are work in stages - make a basic shape and then refine it. get half decent tools - you can make a lot yourself but i would recommend the gw one and some clay shapers. the main thing is practice. only with practice will you learn the best times for leaving the gs (it\'s not always best to sculpt with freshly mixed putty - have an experiment with that) and refine your technique. hope this helps, let us know how you go! good luck

Another vote for the forehead/nose technique. When you think you need a bit of lubricant, just rub the sculpting tool along your head and onto the GS. It works wonders.
Of course, you obviously need a greasy head but for some reason I\'ve never found that a problem lol

Eat plenty of fried chicken, McDonalds, and other greasy foods if you ever are in need of forehead grease! lol
