Hi all,

Im currently trying to learn to paint to a good table top standard and I know to thin the paint, but Im just curious as to how many layers it takes most people to achieve a solid basecoat on a TT mini? Currently its taking me 3 or 4 layers using Mechrite Red (a foundation paint) over a black basecoat to achieve a solid finish. Is the paint too thin, or is this a normal number of layers to use?

I know theres no right or wrong answer to this sort of question, but as I said Im curious to see how other people do things.

Thanks peeps.

I don't think you don't need to dilute the basecoat that much, more important is to not overload the brush with paint. Number of coats vary much between different colours and the size of the area etc. I don't remember how many coats with merchrite red but with many foundations I only need 2 coats for TT. Granted I usually add highlighting and shading over that so it's not always an entirely solid basecoat.

With GW Foundation, one coat & a touch up for the basecoat. Sounds as though you've room to thin less, unless you're layering up to keep a black undercoat showing for shading purposes?

Cheers, B.

Im not doing anythin as fancy as that, these are just intended to be good table top minis (which is pretty much as good as I can do so far!)
