Help, tutorials on layering

Trying to restart painting again and not to depend on drybrushing and inking to highlight.

When I try even simple layering I always seem to have trouble identifying where I should be painting on the layers/highlights.

Are there any tips or tutorials someone could point me too to help me out before I quit again
