Painting NMM is in many ways not much different than painting anything else, but you take contrasts to the very extreme. Highlight all the way to white and shade all the way to black in the case of steel or silver, and a very dark brown in the case of gold, copper or bronze.

When you have objects with sharp angles, it helps putting a dark area next to a light area with the sharp angle as a border inbetween. This helps creating the sharp contrast that can be seen on highly reflective objects. Also it helps create the notion that the object is sharp and hard, like metal is supposed to be.

I don\'t know how much help this is, but it\'s difficult to give general advice in a forum post. Take some pics of something you\'re working on and you can get more detailed advice based on that.

Also, I am working on an article on NMM painting that is supposed to be released in Wyrd Miniatures\' PDF magazine later this autumn. Whis will hopefully explain things in more depth. I can give you a holler when it\'s available.

CMON mini guide

The CMON mini guide works a treat. Just bought mine a few days ago, very good price too.

Tried my first NMM yesterday, all highlights in right place, looks good from a distance. Will spend more time blending next time.

If you\'re painting a whole army, would have thought metallic metal great for rank and file?! It can look great if done well.

Search the forums, lots of threads on this over the years with tips you won\'t get all piled into this one thread, including what to look for to choose how to approach this, style-wise.

Since the arm is not attached to the mini there\'s no way for me to know which way the sword is going to be angled, and thus, I can\'t know how the light will fall on the sword. Direction of lighting is one of the key elements here.

ahh,i didnt think about that, but if you think of it as being thrust straight forward.so lets just say you turn your screen 45%and it is pointing straight.

I\'d say you\'re on the right track when it comes to placing the light and dark areas. Now, you need to take things to its extreme. The downwards-facing side of the sword must be much darker, with the darkest part along the ridge in the middle. Likewise, the upwards facing side much be brighter with a bright line along the ridge (right next to the darkest shadow). The bright line along the upper edge is good. Keep it there, but make it brighter, at least on the upper half of the blade.

Looks better. It\'s got more contrast that in your previous photo. I think you should have some more midtones on the upper side nearest to the hilt. Also, make the shadows even darker on the lower side so that it is almost black along the ridge.

BTW, thanks for your kind words. I don\'t have the means to do any video, regrettably. So, you\'ll have to make do with written stuff and photos.

Here\'s my first attempt photos, as requested.

Look closely for the major bodged bit - a curved highlight in the middle of the small sword when viewed from the front! :)
