Help - Paint mediums and extenders

Hey there. I\'m about to paint my Golden Demon entry and I am in need of A paint extender and a Paint Medium. I know what they are and how to use them, but I have never owned any. I would like a Vajello make, but I dont know which name to pick up. Would it be the \'Matt Medium\' and the \'Drying Retarder\'? Thanks.

EDIT - I would also like to know if Vallejo make a paint thinner, if so, what is it\'s name?

Water based Latexes use (get ready) Water as a paint thinner.

Do a search, you will find as many recipies as painters.

If you want to stay Vellajo, try the glaze medium.

I wouldn\'t bother getting a paint thinner. I use VMC paints mostly and only use water to thin them. Works perfectly well! As for mediums, the VMC Matte Medium is great. It really is matte, no bullshitting! If you want super-matte this is the way to go. As for extender, I think VMC has one, but it\'s cheaper to get another brand. I use Liquitex Slo-dri and you get a 118 ml bottle for the price of two Vallejo 17 ml bottles.

Right guys, I ordered my stuff. In my basket was; Vajello Paint Extender, Matt Medium, Glaze Medium and VMC Red. I think I\'m set to get started once I get them in the post. Don\'t you agree?

Thanks again for your help. Makes a new guy feel all welcome inside... lol

Also, Im told that White spirits are a good paint thinner. I\'m going to run a test drive.

Which of the additives may help the most with chalky finishes? My blends are fine. Just up close, that damn chalk!!!
I was pondering gettin some Glaze Medium... since i work with heavily thinned paints, i could toss in some of that with my water? sigh

Getting rid of chalkiness is mostly a technique thing, I\'d say! Experiment with your techniques and you may find a way to get rid of the chalkiness. Chalkiness is regretably a common thing when you dilute your paints heavily.

For the ten billionth time, forget additives and learn how to use water!!!! It\'s free for god\'s sake, and is perfectly usable for all your painting needs! All you need is paint and water, nothing else.

I agree mostly with that. Except that a paint extender is very useful... It does something water cannot. Otherwise, water can fix everything you may need.

Howz bou sex lube? I actually went into GW today and asked the worker there, his opinion of my chalky probs. He said astro glide, or Vallejo white, and claimed its impossible to have a non-chalky finish with GW white. hmm.

May I ask how you use the liqiutex slow dry extender, i.e. mix 1/1? It\'s very thick I have found, but I\'m keen to try it out, I\'m just not sure how to use it correctly, cheers:D:D

It sounds as if you have a gel extender. I never used a gel and I have heard they can be tricky for miniature painting. Mine is liquid. I just add a drop of it for every 5-6 drops of paint. Works like a charm. Keeps the paint workable for like 30 min on the palette and at least a minute on the mini. Enough to wet blend and such... Also good for doing freehand as the paint doesn\'t dry on the brush as quickly.

Yeah I started using Liquitex Slo-dri recently too after trying to do some free hand only to have the paint dry on the brush v quickly...

Dunno if it\'s different, since I get it in Japan, but it\'s called slo dri 120 here? :) :drunk::drunk:

Thanks for all of your replys, and good luck. I wish it to you too, specifically if you are out to win a Golden Demon trophy.

My Vallejo stuff arrived yesterday, and I found that my extender is a gel. Is there a way I could get round said problems it has? I think I\'m just going to have to water my paint down a bit more when I use it...

Vallejo has impressed me, I think I\'m going to replace my citadel paints with VMC equivalents one day...
