hello i lurk quite a bit round here and occasionally post, however i feel i need to ask of your help! you see one of my goals in life is to win a golden deamon! so i would like some help with my painting i plan on doing a grey knight, in NMM possibly with freehand. here is what one of my 'test models' is looking like at the moment:

also my current paintbrush is wearing out, is a windsor and newton series 7 a good investment or is a standard GW just fine? and in games day would you be allowed to use dragonforge ammo belts?

thankyou very much!

p.s. its a 'test model' because every time i paint it improves slightly! :) sadly this means if i paint a squad the last man look rubbish compared to the first :p
p.p.s more of my stuff over at my blog : www.fuzzbuket.blogspot.com

work on smoothing those transitions. lets see some better pics. back up, and get the model in focus so we can provide better advice.
definitely spring for the good brush - makes all the difference in the world. GW brushes are awful.
afik you can use bits from 3rd party mfgs, just so long as the model is at least 50% gw.

well, your paints look a little thick, the colours seem to be in the right places and with a bit of smoothing them out and mixing them together a bit more the nmm should be ok i guess. oh and go smaller on the details, an even more delicate application of the colours will get it to look crisper and neater, right now it feels out of focus.
its a start, and a lot better than i was when i started doing nmm, hopefully my criticism makes any kind of sense. good luck and have fun painting.

oh and for freehands i use a soft pencil, 2b or 3b or similar, to draw the outlines etc on to the painted area. a soft pencil like this will not damage the paintjob if your a bit careful and they wash of with water rather easily.
other than that any idea/theory that go into ordinary drawing and painting pretty much applies to freehand stuff on minis as well. there are lots of books on art and how tos etc, these could be useful (i wouldnt know, studied art for three years and didnt learn anything new at all.....)

thankyou for the help :) i did another terminator arfter the current one and then arfter your input a justicar, wich was painted with VERY very , very watery paints until the last layer (insert facepalm here) personally i think that on some of the plates it worked well, on other parts not so much :(

the old knight ( with cool banner, i tried to make it look burnt) ( sorry for the horribly large photo, and hes still WIP)

and the newer knight

thankyou for reading :)

oh and ive been thinking, as a whole knight is a large area and i miss places is it better to paint the plates individually?

not hard to see progress here! :) i do think you should paint the plates/details individually, and not move on until you're absolutely happy with the result at the particulat detail. that works best for me anyway!

Second one is a definite improvement, looking good. I think (although I have every little NMM experience) the colours seem in the right places it's just a case of smoothing out the transitions in colour more. Maybe a bit less of the brightest colour?

I think that may be a rule for certain Tournaments, but as far as I know you are not allowed to use "bits" from any other manufacturer, unless it were converted so heavily they can't tell it is non-GW. But this may depend on the country you are competing in, I say "why take a chance, and be disqualified?" Just use GW or scratch built components. Flock, static grass snow, water effect, and other basing terrain is a different story, and you can use those. I would just stay away from any sculpted pieces from another company.
