Have I made a mistake?

So I couldnt spray my woodelf warhawk as it was dark out and its pretty scary and I didnt want to go out. So as I wanted it done as soon as possible I slapped on a coat of GW foundation. Now I am thinking it might not have been the best idea. How is it going to hold up as a primer? Am I going to have to strip it off and start again?

Nope It works ok as a straight \"Over Bare Metal\" paint.
Might be prone to easy \"RUB OFF\" on pointy bits, but if you can give it a touch of love with Dullcoate (or something similar) it should be Ok.

When I bought my first starter set from GW no one told me that I was suppose to use primer. So after many failed attemptes of painting directly on plastic I realized that I needed some kind of foundation to help the paint stick to the mini. I did not have any spray primer so I just used black paint and it worked very well. It came out smooth and held paint very well. Just make sure to water it down a little before you put it on the mini or it might mess up the details.

Einion will probably be along shortly to tell you that GW primer is nothing more than regular paint in a spraycan anyway! lol

I\'ve \"primered\" minis with regular paint before, and it worked fine. I wanted to prime something black and only had white primer (and was too cheap to buy black for just one mini!).

Enion doesn\'t have to say that, because I\'ll say that.

Primer is primer and GW spray paint is not primer.

As to if you need primer:

Are you going to paint this mini and then put it on a shelf? You could probably get by without primer.

If it is to be handled then you\'ll probably wish you had primered it.

If it is a main character fig (D&D) then it won\'t matter because you\'ll rub the paint off anyway unless you encase it in plastic.

Thanks guys. It is to be used for gaming though I am expecting it to be shot up fairly quickly before it gets handled too much. I normally use the GW spray cans for the metals. I have a cheaper Krylon that is great for plastics but not very sticky-on on metals. I think I will put some gloss varnish on the tips of the wings and use some dullcote on it for protection.
The foundation has chipped a little so far but only \'cos I dropped it and not from normal accidental touches while painting it so I am hopeful.
Thanks again.

I use Master\'s Touch primer for metal minis. It sticks well, doesn\'t go on too thick and I seem to have less problems with it overall than with Krylon. Can get it at most Home Depot stores. Can find it at smaller chains too--I usually get mine at either Menards or Do It Best.
For sealer I use 1 coat of Krylon Crystal Clear, then 2 coats of Testors Dullcote over that. I quit using Krylon matte spray when they decided to start changing the formula every 6 months or so. Half the time the \'new\' formula would dry to a dusty looking finish and ruin whatever I had sealed with it. Don\'t mind it so much for pieces my husband is going to play with, but sucks to spend hours on something to sell and have it ruined in 30 seconds.
