gw primer

Hey Guys,

I recently went to my local hobby shop and saw that there is no longer any Citadel black primer. The only black spray was chaos black. I asked the clerk about it and he said Citadel no longer sells black primer and chaos black is the same thing. It seems to me like these are two different kinds of paint all together. The chaos black seems much glossier than what I am used to, but maybe it is just my imagination.

Does anyone know if in fact this is the same paint? If not it looks like I need to find a new primer. I heard Dupli-Color is a good primer even though it is for automobiles. Anyone have any experience using this brand or have any suggestions?

i heard that the c.b was never an actual primer anyway just and undercoat. prolly just a dodgy can. you shake it enough? try popping it in *warm* water for 5 mins (not hot or it\'ll explode!)

I\'ve been very happy with Duplicolor: fine spray and good at 65% humidity (I haven\'t tried any higher). $5 a can (including tax) at O\'Reilly\'s auto parts. I\'ve seen Duplicolor at other stores (Autozone, Napa, etc), but only O\'Reilly\'s seems to have white in my area. Gray and black are pretty easy to find.

I bought a tin of Chaos Black spray and it was rubbish. It\'s not the same as their black primer, I\'m pretty sure of that. It resisted off the raised parts of the model for some reason, and certainly dried glossier than their primer did.

I chucked it away and went to Halfords to buy some decent (cheaper) stuff. Wilkinsons is worth a look for spray as well (in the UK).

I just bought a can and I\'m pissed. It can\'t be the same stuff. The smell is different, the consistency is different and the coverage is crap. A total waste of $15 Canadian.

The new Skull White and Chaos Black basecoat sprays are not the same as their old formula primers.

They are essentially a new formulation by a different producer in closer colors to the Skull White and Chaos Black from the Citadel paint range.

My understanding is that they are not as durable nor bond as well as the old spray primers, but do have a smoother finish and (again) more accurate colors in comparison to the paint range.

Unfortunately, the Citadel Spray Primers have now gone the way of the old Citadel Spray Paints (Blood Red, Bleached Bone, Ultramarine Blue, Gobbo Green, Boltgun Metal, etc.) so stock up while you still can - all the hobby shops near me have pulled the old stuff/sold out from their shelves so I bought a can of the Skull White.

In terms of alternatives, I\'ve heard good things about Armoury\'s spray primers (black, white, and grey) and Dupli-Color Sandable Auto Body Primer (black, white, and grey as well.)

Tbh, if you\'re doing rank and file regiment troops, any primer/undercoat spray will work fine as long as you spray at a decent distance and do a few thin coats.

It\'s only purpose is to provide a surface for the actual paint to adhere to, so even car primer will be ok.

Paint on primer is just as good too - I remember back in the day, GW used to do \"Smelly primer\" which was great for finishing those deep recesses that a spray might not reach.

Thanks so much for all of the responses. I figured something was going on from the bad coat it gave me..it seemed really runny. Maybe it was just the humidity, who knows. This was the first bad prime job I have gotten out of a Citadel spray and the new name made me suspicious.

I did run out and got a couple of cans of Duplicolor black primer. I will let you guys know how it goes.

Thanks!

Well, I just tried Dupli-Color Black Sandable Primer and I was very impressed. It went on very smooth and didn\'t obscure any details. I picked it up at Pep Boys(in the U.S.) for maybe 5 bucks a can. If you guys haven\'t tried it I highly recommend giving it a shot.

GW primer sucks
had to get that off my chest...just had a really bad episode after hubby saying oh it will save you some time if you spray prime.
Eff that, I will continue to hand paint primer on no matter how big the project
