GW Matte

I know there has been huge discussion over what varnish is best used for minis but I just want some more opinions.

I live in New Zealand and can't get the Testors Dullcoat range and I believe customs would stop the importation of it. I am faced with a dilemma. I prefer the matte effect created by the gamesworkshop matte varnish but it seems they don't sell/produce it anymore. What is another brand of varnish that gives similar effects to the GW matte varnish? Or anything that is widely accessible worldwide?

Thanks in advance :)

Try going to an art shop and asking their advice. I got a pretty good matte spray varnish this way. It's not Testor's, but as far as I'm concerned it does a pretty decent job. And it was pretty affordable too, compared to GW's prices! ;)

daler rowney's brush on is the mutts nuts. protects well too, however you need to clean your brush with turps/white spirit. cheap too

Ok I will go to an art supply store and ask for advice. Are there any specific ingredients inside the matte varnish that wouldn't be suitable for minis?

Any advice on other brands would be helpful, I can sometimes find the British versions here.

Really?!?! Thank you so much for that link Dr.Evilmonki. I have been to Bunnings, Mitre 10 etc and was told I couldn't get it.

EDIT: How does the Vallejo brush on varnish compare? I am a bit reluctant with spray varnish as I can't see how much I am applying and don't want to wreck my painted minis. Is it easy to apply the spray?

I have used brush on but it is Matisse Final varnish, matt finish. It is super matt finish and is fine to apply, just need to stir the living crap out of it because the matt medium settles.

Spray varnish is fine, just apply it in layers. But of course it does also depend on what you are using the figures for. If it is display then either way is ok, but if you are wanting to varnish mass units then spray is the preferrable way in my opinion.

i got my testor yesterday, and god damn its aeons better than anything else ive used! i dont spray either, i dont dare to risk wrecking a months work by using to much spray. works perfectly fine using an old brush :)

any brush on or spary on matt varnish or laquer should do the trick.
The solvents in laquers may soften some of your paints so I'd test first.

Varnishes may have an orange/yellow tint to them if they are not refined enough (not sure about the total ingredients - Enion will be along soon to correct me...:glasses-cool: ).

Ureathane varnishes are very hard when cured.

Automotive ones (polyisocyanurates) are very hard - usually glossy - and not something you want to mess with without proper gear...
