LOTR game got me into the hobby with the first magazine, however i stopped playing when they prices went up because there wasnt very many good people still playing, also they totally changed the rules around.

I still like some of the miniatures and would fancy a game again sometime, i remember when we used to do helms deep and other huge games at my local store

Sounds like the rules have changed based on that last post. I was not a fan of the original. I got the original game for Xmas back when it was new and only played it 3 times. I was not a big fan of the fact it was basically just roll a D6 and whoever got the hightest won, the only time stats matteredd was in the case of a tie. Which meant that there was only a 1 in 6 chance that a better model was actually better then a weaker one. The hero points made up for this with heroes, but for the \'rank and file\' troops this drove me nuts.

I much prefer pretty much every other mini game out there to LotR.

I\'ve played Mines of Moria a few times and it is a good enough game in its own right, the problem with it is that it is basically designed around the Moria part of the trilogy and therefore a bit limited. The Lotr game book itself along with Legions of Middle Earth makes the game a whole lot better IMO.

Personally? The game is heavily unbalanced and relies heavily on special abilities of \"heroes\" to the point that for some armies regular troops are pretty much canon fodder off very limited consequences for the course of the game.

They will usually tell you that the LOTR is a \"game of heroes\" which is all well, but then what is the point of making the whole gamut of other miniatures.

I think that since someone went through the effort of buying it for you, the least you could do is go through the effort of painting it and playing it.
How unfun could it be?

Sounds like a great gift.

paint and have fun...... then put it away and never tell anyone else you played lotr.

hehe.

seriously a bit boring of a game and only a handful of minis that i would buy. and i do mean HANDFUL. the game is pretty easy and just too easy for my tastes. i like using tactics instead of relying on luck much like skeeve said.

but hey paint em\' up and atleast play one game. you may actually like it.
