GW does something right. Urban Basing Kit!

Went to my LGS today and was looking for something to waste my money on and I came across the Urban Basing Kit from GW. While I tend to shudder at what GW puts out I must admit I was quite happy.

The retail on this product is roughly 15.00 the place I go discounts everything and so I think I spent less then that. For that price I get 5 plastic containers about an inch and a half high and 2 inches in diameter.
In the first is a coil of barbed wire about 12 inches long when pulled to a decent length
The 2nd has small slate chips
The 3rd has Med slate chips
and the last two hold a total of 10-12 resin rubble pieces with broken terrian, guns, skulls, all perfectly sized for 25mm round bases and a few larger for 40mm round bases.

This is a nice wau of packaging materials for basing. While It might be enough for a medium army the ammounf of stuff you get seems worth it. While many will say you can create the same quality stuff from your bitz box, for us lazy gamers this is great.

Opinions?

It does look good value.....it\'s sometimes hard to source certain rocks depending upon where you live......

Not keen on the barbed wire though; for the Games day charity mini I\'m doing, I\'m going to try making my own following an ancient tome I have called \"Stan Catchpole\'s Modelling Workshop\"

I really think this is worth the price but...a guy told me that here in Italy it\'s already out of production/unavailable ?!?
It\'s kinda weird since i saw it as new exit on june italian wd,but after a quick search on the gw italian on line store i saw no trace of it among the products...
anyone have an explanation for this?

The barbed wire sold by GW looks a bit weird. I\'d rather get photo etched barbed wire like the stuff Hasslefree sells. In fact, I\'ve got some on the way! :D

I wouldn\'t bother personally. A large part of the deal is slate chips. Free to me, extremely cheap from garden centres etc if you can\'t get \'em free. The wire looks rubbish, I prefer the strip mesh wire (which actually looks like razorwire, unlike the GW stuff). I\'d buy a few tubs of rubble if they were sold seperately, but they\'re not.

The only think of value in that pack are the resin pieces. I mean the barb wire is 16 gauge wire with 22 gauge wire wrapped around it. You could do it youself if you had the time and inclination.

The slate chips you can get by spending a dollar and buying a slate tile. Hit it a few times with a hammer and you have all the rocks you need.

Anyway GW b!%@# over

Drinks are on me at the Freak Bar.

for experienced modellers who know where to get cheeper materials this is no good.

but for less experienced modellers something like this is great.
and i am pretty certain the razor wire is like it is, is because of the age of a lot of gw customers.
there parents wouldn\'t want little billy shredding his fingers on brass etched barbed wire.

i actualy think this was a good thing by gw for it\'s newer as well as younger customers.

I thought the stuff looked pretty damn good....plus the handy little tubs would be good for other basing materials...

looks ok, the resin bits would sell well if sold separately i reckon, i\'d get some thats for sure. don\'t like the wire but i agree it\'s probably the age thing. i have some hudsen and allen stuff and i doubt you could get anything more realistic. i am DESPARATE to use it

Yup, the urban basing kit is what is known as a splash product. The sort of thing that starts out as an idea jotted on the back of a fag packet in the pub, and still seems good enough in the morning to warant putting out a bit of a tester to see if people are into it or not.

It is produced in very small quantities and intended to sell out within a month or two.

The Urban Basing Kit went down really well and sold out in just a few days in some countries unless I am very much mistaken, so I guess it shows that it was a fairly popular product. You can therefore probably expect something similar to be fitted into the main range in the future.

I have actually wrote to GW expressing my complaints on their stupidity releasing this as a splash product.

My local store in Coventry got a measley 3 in stock, which were sold out within 2 minutes of opening. I was informed by the manager that mail order sold out just as quick.

This was after they dedicated a good 5-6 pages in White dwarf explaining how good they are (and I think they were).

Whoever had the stupid idea of splash releasing them should be fired, and by that I mean actually burned at the stake, not just job lost.

If they are gonna hype up a product then they should make enough to supply the demand created and just release it. Keep their \'splash releases\' for their copies of Razzle.

Barstewards. :cussing:

(of course, I was politer than this in my letter as I would actually like a response)

I did and found nothing...

WTF kind of deal is that? I have not bought GW products for well over a year, and finally decided to spend my loot and they are SOLD OUT of a brand new product?

Its almost as bad as the year I decided to become a Major League Baseball fan, only to see the bastards go out on strike!
