GW Decals

Hey is there some trick to making GW\'s decals work on the models or should I just throw them in the trash and give up. Here\'s the deal I finished a squad of Marines and started putting the Ultra \"U\" on the pad and it won\'t lay down. it sticks up in the top middle or it pops up on the bottom sides. I wish these were dry transfers they would be soo much easier. Hand painting them seems like a long drawn out affair.. Tips or help would be cool.

Before you put them on trim them as much as possible. Use heaps of water and use an old brush to position them. When they are dry use a clear paint over them to make sure they stay down.

honestly

THROW THEM AWAY.....
one mistake when putting them on can ruin a mini.......

when you think, oh hey ill just peel this off and try again, it rips up paint while at the same time only coming half off....

that and the fact that dont look as good as if you just did it yourself (practice, wont look so good the first time, but the more you do it, the better it looks and ends up being tons better than a shiny douchy decal that never lays flat and takes almost as long to put on as to draw the thing yourself.)

blah....
these things have messed with me a couple of time......andnow they are rotting in a garbage pit somewhere....

They are just core troops or I would hand paint them on. I\'ll try the trimming them down more thing if that don\'t work I\'ll skip it. LOL

The ones in the pictures always look so nice. They also don\'t seem to be the same as the ones they actually provide. The battle for Macragge box shows Roman numerals and arrows along with some space craft marking that didn\'t come in my box ... another chuckle.. Oh well.

Agreed, throw those pieces of shit away. I tried so hard when I first started painting and found out through hours of trial and error that they suk. Just learn free hand painting and it\'ll look much better.

those decal were not there in your box because
A.) GW made actually useful transfers for the cover of the box
B.) They dont exist and they are freehand.....

furneyy furney!!
love the game (just got into it) but it seems that GW needs to put a bit more tender love and care into what they shovel out.....
just sayin......i hate those transfers so much i had to come back and rant a bit more....ill shut up now....

Undercoat the place you want to put the decal with a little gloss varnish.
Use a little amount of microscale to bring it in the right position.
When dry, pass several washes over it, with the same colour as the mini.
Noone wil see it\'s a decal after this.

They work fine for me but you have to use some additional chemicals on them to get them to \'conform\' to the item they are being applied to. I use a product called Micro Sol. What it does is softens the decal prior to applying it so it is more pliable. It works very well. Then I apply Micro Set to improve the adhesion of the decal. I\'ve been using these two products for many years and have been able to get a decal soft enough so it will conform to the rivets on a model plane without leaving any air bubbles. It looks just like it was painted on. You just gotta be real careful because it makes the decal VERY soft and will tear.

Not a terribly demanding surface but here\'s an example anyway:

Start with giving the area a coat with gloss varnish. Then you cut away all the film surrounding the decal, so you only see the decal. Then use lots of water and lay the decal on the pad, and position it with a paintbrush. Just leave it to dry, and paint a coat of matt varnish at the end.

I had a major struggle with the same problem, but I talked with a staff at my local GW store and he helped me out.
