gunbarrel drilling

I\'m having some problems with the drilling out of the gunbarrels ( mostly space marine bolters ).

My problem is that I don\'t know a good, cheap tool for it. I\'ve used a knife ( which work quite good but isn\'t very accurate ) and I don\'t want to spend a lot of cash on a drill.

So what do you use?

I use both a Pin Vice and an Archimedies drill.
A Pin Vice you can pick up from GW, Ok not as cheap as shopping around but very definitly worth the investment of a few quid. Plus it\'s the best tool for drilling holes for Pinning mini\'s together.
Quite a number of people on here also use pin vices as tools to hold the mini when painting it. (See a truely multi function device) :)

Foundry do a nice pin vice drill that comes with a much wider selection of bits than the gw one.

Stores such as Hobby Craft do sets of finger drills.

Very cheap and sometimes better than messing around with a pin vice.

I\'m not sure what a \"finger drill\" is but a pin vice is basically an exacto handle that holds very small drill bits.

Get one. They are available in all hobby and art supply stores, are fairly inexpensive, and you will wonder how you ever did without one.

If you are just drilling barrels, I find an exacto knife is actually more accurate because you can easily shift from one side to another if you are off center - harder with a drill.
I usually start the hole with the knife just to make sure it\'s centered.

Basically, stick the point of the knife where you want, then twist the knife in a circle. If you are off center, just twist back and forth between 60 degrees in the direction you want to move the hole.

As regards accuracy with ANY kind of drilling, it is best practice to make a guiding hole or dent first.

In other words, twist out a small dent in the centre with your knife, then use this to steady and guide your drill bit.

A finger drill is basically a drill bit but the shank is thicker so it can be held between the fingers and twisted without the need to be put in a pin vice.

Word. I didn\'t follow this sound piece of advice on my LandRaider\'s Heavy Bolters... now both holes are off-center in different ways...
